Minnesota governor, GOP reach deal to end shutdown

Minnesota governor, GOP reach deal to end shutdown - Washington Times

The new budget plan will raise $700 million in tobacco settlement bonds and delay payments of another $700 million to school districts, pushing that line item into the next year.
Republicans lost ground on state spending as they had sought a budget cap of about $34 billion and ended up with one at $35.4 billion.

House Speaker Kurt Zellers said after a three-hour meeting with the governor that it was a hard-struck bargain that, in the end, put state workers first.

“It was about making sure that we get a deal that we can all be disappointed in, but a deal that is done, a budget that was balanced, a state that was back to work,” said Mr. Zellers, a Republican.

I'm struggling with how to feel about this.

Dayton gave too much ground. He really did.

I'm proud of him for trying, and he'll have my vote again for doing so. I understand that it's hard to reason with a kamikaze party that treats the country's health like a bargaining trip. No telling how close to the ground the GOP was willing to let Minnesota fall. They genuinely don't care. They would have probably just watched it crash and burn. So I can see why Dayton eventually folded.

Dayton did the right thing by resisting. He may have done the right thing by folding, too. He resisted because what the GOP was proposing was horrible for the state, and folded because continued closure was horrible for the state. The GOP simply doesn't care about the people they represent. What choice did Dayton have, as the only sane person in the room?

But at the same time... it's a truly disappointing result.

I feel for him. And he will continue to have my support. And those who played fast and loose with our state, I will actively campaign against.

    I prefer that headline.

It's a good day for the people of Minnesota.
Climate, changes. It takes a particularly uneducated population to buy into the idea that it's their fault climate is changing and further political solutions can fix it.
