Should parents lose custody of severely obese kids?

I heard this on a radio news station and it seems to be the same story.
Should parents be held responsible for their severely OBESE children?
I mean, if a pre-teen/teen weights in over 450lbs, should the government intervene for the childs safety? or do we just let parents kill their own kids prematurely?

my opinion is that we should have the government intervene and get the parents on an education plan and weight loss plan for their kids. Only remove the child if the parents fail the program.

CTV Edmonton - Should parents lose custody of severely obese kids? - CTV News

A controversial new editorial is firing up the debate about what to do about kids who have become severely overweight, suggesting that some of them should be placed into foster care.

In an opinion piece in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association, an obesity specialist and his co-author discuss the ethics and legal considerations of taking severely overweight children away from their parents.

The piece is written by Dr. David Ludwig, an obesity specialist at Children's Hospital Boston and Lindsey Murtagh, a lawyer and a researcher at Harvard's School of Public Health.

They say the children they're thinking about aren't those who are a little overweight. They're referring to those who are severely obese, who are on the brink of developing health problems, like type 2 diabetes or liver disease.

Some of these children might be taking in 1,000 calories a day or more above what they should, "suggesting profoundly dysfunctional eating and activity habits."

I think their yearly taxes on the child should be by the pound. A buck a pound. I promise if we'd tax obesity these people would get skinny real fast. Nothing gets people's attention more than a pain in the pocketbook.

If obese children were taken away from parents then the government will have to feed them. Where will that money come from?

The government will. That's what they do now for those already in government foster centers

Gotta define "severely obese". Government is in no condition to take that on, nor should they.

It dumbfounds me to see all the fat kids walking around these days. Fat people, for that matter.

Walk for 45 minutes a day, and don't eat a box of cookies before you go to bed, and you can control your weight. It's not that hard.

Same place the money would come from when their obesity becomes a disability, but less of it.
