Re: China: U.S. Spends Too Much on Military

Ignoring the obviously idiotic comments by some folks, we can absolutely cut defense without cutting jobs. We can even increase defense spending on equipment (while maintaining overall defense cuts) which would stimulate job growth. We just need to do things radically more efficiently. Anyone that has any involvement with the senior leadership of the military has a feel for how much money we waste annually on things like conferences, trainings, administrative costs, contract costs, etc.

However, I dont think China is being benevolent and looking out for US citizens. I think China is stirring discontent, trying to get us to slow defense spending so they dont have to keep up, and is also not a little bit concerned about the debt we owe them. China may want to heed their own words of caution with regard to 'taking care of' their own people...at least where 'taking care of' their people doenst mean rounding up dissidents and imprisonng them.

To some degree and in some instances, but China's concerns are neither here nor there, imho. We can't do something because they say they want us to or because they say they don't want us to.
    I may be wrong.

You dont have to be a liberal to recognize there are significant areas for cuts in the DoD budget, just like there are in every area of the fed. We continue to pay for pork projects solely because certain congressmen lobby for them, not because the military wants them. We continue to spend money on R and D projects with concepts sold by contractors that never come to fruition. Defense contractors hire retired colonels and generals, then get them to pitch concepts for contracts awarded and signed by general and colonols that are about to retire and end up working at...shockingly...that same defense contractor. They then have 7-10 years to run the project and if the idea is accepted after the investment then MORE cash is dumped into the program...if it is rejected (and MOST concepts never get beyond the concept and R and D stage) then the contract just expires and they move on to some new sales pitch.

I love how people like you American typically have to start a post about something by accusing someone that has nothing to do with the actual subject. While I despite China and most everything they stand for, what they say is not without merit. We spend far to much on our military. Our own nuclear programs alone are bigger than the budget of NASA, and the government has rewarded sweetheart deals to quite a few private contractors that need to be re-examined. The military just like most anything in the US government can be made far more efficient, effective, and cost less if we eliminate programs and elements that do not make any sense. Like China, I have serious doubts in our own government's reporting of what the budget actually is. There is nothing keeping us from defending ourselves from true threats such as China and pulling completely out of the middle east, and downsizing certain installations in ways that make sense across the world. Not only can we continue to have a presence worldwide, and be able to mobilize just as fast, it will save a lot of military men and women, as well as taxpayers a lot of everything.

In theory, some of those loopholes were understandable, but in practice they sometimes made it possible for millionaires to pay nothing, while a bus driver was paying ten percent of his salary, and that’s crazy." -Reagan

Oh good gawd, you can't possibly believe that.

China is working 24 hours a day on it's military development. Don't kid yourself. They're just so far behind us militarily, they want us to slow down so they can catch up.

Re: China: U.S. Spends Too Much on Military

The U.S. and China are probably more strongly linked now than at any other time in history. They are the number one holder of U.S. Debt and I suspect we are number one when it comes to their exports. A solution of war between the two countries would have nothing but negative impacts both ways.

The Chinese general may have said the right thing for the wrong reasons, but we do need to stop spending so much on defense. We outspend the next country by a 6 to 1 ratio and then go on to outspend the world combined on defense.

The Federal government is charged with defending our borders from attack. Oddly, I see no enemy army off our shores getting ready to invade. Us invading Iraq in no way defended our borders. Afghanistan is debatable on this topic. Now we are involved with bombing Libya. IMO the last righteous war we were in was WWII.

So, now we do a little math. Annual defense budget is $750 Billion. We have spent right at $4 Trillion on two recent wars. It will be a while before we have the cost of the Libya action, but that will need to be factored in as well.

In a great many of the wars or military actions in the world, the greatest constant is U.S. involvement. We would be better off exporting them McDonalds than fighting most of them. We seem to be set on making new enemies, rather than non-military engagement.

There is no Constitutional mandate, nor enumerated directive for the U.S. to be the world police. We cannot continue to ignore the domestic problems this country is facing today in favor of military globetrotting. It's past time to turn our focus inward and to insist that others go police the world, if it's so important.

This isn't a left or right political issue, it's just common sense.

Why would we have to "slow down"? I bet there's **** tons of waste in the defense department, lots of fat to cut which wouldn't harm our efficiency or technology. Plus we could stop participating in forever war since that's cost us well over a trillion dollars thus far. I mean, we're out of money right? I hear the right talk about that all the time. How come y'all won't entertain the notion of less spending and smaller government?

Even going by the likely inflated DoD estimates Chinese military spending is still lower as a percentage of GDP when compared to Russia, France, and the United Kingdom. The Russians are actually nearly at the point of the U.S. in that respect, though obviously the white Ruskies of the north aren't quite as frighteningly foreign-looking as the great yellow threat of the East.
