South Sudan becomes world's newest nation.

South Sudan became an independent state on 9 July 2011 at 12:01 a.m. local time following a referendum held in January 2011 in which nearly 99% of voters opted for separation from the rest of Sudan.[5] As of July 2011, it is the world's newest independent state and is recognized by two countries.

Great another "south" country to keep track of. :2razz:

Great! I hope they can make a better life for their people.

Great news! I sincerely hope they make it work.

Looks promising, their president wields the pimp hat of power. :2razz:

Unfortunately, Khartoum is already threatening to block the flow of oil through the pipelines...

The South says it can survive on credit for as long as it takes to build a new pipeline through Kenya...

The questionable "comic relief" aside, congratulations to South Sudan. Instead of cracking jokes about a nation winning their independence just like we did over 235 years ago, we should be celebrating right along with them. After all, aren't we a nation in the business of "spreading and promoting democracy"?

Stop with the foolish "nigga jokes" no matter how slight the enuendo and support this country's newfound freedom!

No it really is a great thing for the country. They needed to be on their own. It is just that their president is so badass looking it is awesome. I mean the hat and the facial hair, it just adds to the greatness that they are their own country.

Congrats to South Sudan, just please do not make it a theocratic state.

Shhhhh! religious fundamentalism and separatism are only ok when people we like do it (see South Ossetia and Palestine)

Another failed state for terrorists to set up camp.

And yes it is already a failed state. It cant support it self, it is in defacto war with the North plus has at least 12 different "rebel" groups around the country that does not recognize the new government.. oh and did I mention it cant support it self? It has plenty of oil, but no way to export it... well there is exporting it through North Sudan, but since they are at war pretty much then that wont happen.

While it might be on paper a good thing that the "Christian south" has broken away from the "Muslim north", in reality it does not change much. The South has been ruled for a long time by themselves. I do hope they make it, but I aint optimistic one bit.

Of 20 posts what do most have to say about serious subject? Pure meaningless drivel.

I hope that this new found Independence holds but it looks like oil is going to be a continuing issue.

I hope not.

Congrats to them! It it just me or does he really just rock the hat?
