Another failed state for terrorists to set up camp.

And yes it is already a failed state. It cant support it self, it is in defacto war with the North plus has at least 12 different "rebel" groups around the country that does not recognize the new government.. oh and did I mention it cant support it self? It has plenty of oil, but no way to export it... well there is exporting it through North Sudan, but since they are at war pretty much then that wont happen.

While it might be on paper a good thing that the "Christian south" has broken away from the "Muslim north", in reality it does not change much. The South has been ruled for a long time by themselves. I do hope they make it, but I aint optimistic one bit.

Of 20 posts what do most have to say about serious subject? Pure meaningless drivel.

I hope that this new found Independence holds but it looks like oil is going to be a continuing issue.

    I hope not.

Huh? Why would it become a theocratic state?
I'd be much more concerned about the general political instability and corruption that plagues much of Sub-Saharan Africa, especially petrostates.

Indeed. The functioning lack of sewage system seems far more of a pressing concern then theocracy. Plus they are most Catholic so I wouldn't worry much about that. The biggest issue of the revenue sharing between the North and South of oil.

Btw, Kandahar, does Southern Sudan have exports that can survive Dutch Disease?

I mostly agree with this. I think it's good that they aren't ruled by Bashir's regime anymore, with which they had nothing in common. While I do think they can be proud of this accomplishment and deserve to celebrate, the long-term picture remains pretty bleak. While it's true that some parts of Africa may be primed for an economic boom, South Sudan probably isn't one of them. If you look at the conditions in South Sudan, they're hardly a recipe for success. It is A) landlocked, B) surrounded by badly governed neighbors, C) paying its bills with oil money, D) has little transportation/communication infrastructure, and E) is among the poorest countries in the world.

The only other country that fits that description well is Chad, which has a tragic history and is one of the worst places in the world to live.
