I think they are immature for the most part. I mean really at 18-25 the larger percentage of youngsters are into partying and sex, period. I mean all you have to do is look at the price of auto insurance and the accident rate among young people. They are however mature enough to handle DADT being gone I would think. I am talking overall maturity, not just about certain things like DADT being repealed.

But let me try to be clear, when I speak of treating like children, I'm speaking to his specific claim that they are not mature enough to accept an end to DADT. If we have to shield them that much, then we are treating them like children. I say they are adults. Treat them like adults. And punish those who rail to live up to the expectation. But don't shield them as if they were children, saying they can't handle the change.
    OK I agree here.

Like I said his experience relative to the overall maturity level of young troops I absolutely agree with. I also think they will not have much of a problem with DADT being gone either way, they are mature enough for the most part. In fact I think the young people are far more accepting of it than the older generations. This is the end should make it even easier.

Will there be issues with the ban being lifted? Absolutely. Just like when black soldiers were allowed to be integrated with whites. However, do those incidents warrant the ban to remain in place? I don't think so.

I know our military is professional enough as a whole to handle the ban being lifted. There will be problems I'm sure, hell there are problems now with it and those people that screw up are dealt with. Always a few bad apples no matter where you go, but as a whole our military is highly professional.
I never said anything about the majority. But, my whole point--since my first post in this thread--is that if this is done too quickly, it could have very damaging effects. There has to be a acclimation period and if they skip over that, it will be bad news.

How is two or three months really going to make a difference in how well acclimation to the idea of gays serving openly will go? The administration is telling us that the training should be complete by the end of this month or next at the latest, and Obama and the brass has said that as soon as training is complete, the repeal bill is to be signed off and go into complete effect in 60 days. It isn't like the military is kicking out people right now for being gay, since it pretty much requires approval from the SECDEF to do anyway, and everyone knows this.

I really am tired of all the Gay crap that gets the amount of attention it does when there are actual important issues.
I want DADT changed to DABIDC. Which stands for Don't Ask Because I don't Care.

Let's move on, this has been done to death and it's been decided.

Fine. Allow it to be completed, to help make sure that the transformation period goes as smooth as possible.

I don't care either way, but I personally think it is retarded to put anyone out under DADT now since it is quite likely that they will be able to get a chance to get back in after the repeal is completely done. It is just going to waste a lot of money (from our basically broke government) to put people out for being gay when even in the repeal training it says that most of those put out under DADT are probably going to be allowed the opportunity to get back into the military once DADT is officially gone because they will be changing reenlistment codes as necessary for anyone who had their reenlistment code affected by just being put out under DADT.

I never said anything about discharging anyone for being gay.

Like I said, I think we're close on this.

AUSTAN GOOLSBEE: I think the world vests too much power, certainly in the president, probably in Washington in general for its influence on the economy, because most all of the economy has nothing to do with the government.

That is what is being affected by this court decision, whether anyone can be discharged right now for being openly gay.
