Conn. becomes 1st state requiring paid sick time

By STEPHEN SINGER, AP Business Writer – 2 hours ago

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut has become the first state to require businesses to offer employees paid sick time.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced Tuesday that he signed the law requiring businesses in the service industry with 50 or more employees to allow workers to accrue one hour of sick time for every 40 hours worked. The law takes effect Jan. 1.

Holy Cow, even the libs running California aren't that dumb. Small businesses will simply dry up and blow away. I knew there was a darn good reason I packed up and moved out of Connecticut in 1986. Those legislators are absolutely crazy.

Im betting a lot of businesses at or near 50 will be letting people go and not rehiring for those positions. I can see this in a skilled labor position, but not in a service indsutry.

Oh...and hey...I notice a linked article there that led to a story about the democrat Connecticut governor laying off union workers. Now...why havent we heard much about this???

I hadn't heard that.

So-- kids that work fast food, (many fast food joints own SEVERAL of them)-- those kids can now party on Friday night, call in sick on Saturday, and get PAID??? As a parent of 5 kids I am saying that is absurd!

Not that I support the law (I will read more on it before I decide what I think about it) but how many 'small businesses' hire 50 employees?

The article linked in the OP gives very little information, so that is impossible to tell if that is doable or not. And unfortunately, my computer at work is screwing up now so I can't look for more information... argh!!!

Im not shocked. Its only in states with a republican governor cutting union jobs that people are loosing their ****ing minds. Dont hear too much about the cuts in dem controlled states even pretty much everyone realizes their fiscal stupidity is driving them all to the poorhouse.

Conn. unions ask to reopen budget talks with Gov - NewsTimes

My wife is a union member and gets a monthly propaganda magazine. The last magazine had articles about how the republicans are cutting public sector unions not out of any sense of fiscal responsbility but only for power.

While they listed all of the states making changes, they only discussed republicans that were making the cuts and never mentioned democrats or gave any indication that some of the states making cuts were democrat controlled. The only way you could put that together, is if you were political savvy enough.

and they can still be terminated for abusing sick leave ... or any other reason the business owner would choose to cite
you mistake the accruing of sick leave with the ability to abuse accrued sick leave

my uncle's has 60.

currently. he's waiting to see how much his costs improve from Obamacare and if they hike taxes or pass Cap-n-Tax.

anywho, let's see where Conn's unemployment rate goes after this.

I have never worked anywhere that a hangover is considered an illness that's covered by sick leave.

Now we can watch Connecticut and California get into a contest to see which State can run the most businesses out of State before total collapse and bankruptcy.

How long til we can tell?

So if you work 40 hours... you're entitled to an hour paid of sick leave?

What's the problem with this again? Just to do the math here, to get a single 8 hour day of paid leave you'd have to work for 8 weeks. Am I missing something? Why are people against this again? You'd be entitled to a week's worth of paid sick leave in a year if you work an 8 hour day. Isn't that what most people get around the industrial world?
