Despite numerous breaches of arms embargoes and continued threats to expand its nuclear weapons program, North Korea has assumed the presidency of the United Nations Conference on Disarmament. In a speech to the 65-nation arms control forum in Geneva, the newly-appointed president, North Korean Ambassador So Se Pyong, said he was “very much committed to the Conference.”
Appointing a North Korean to chair the UN’s only multilateral disarmament forum is like “asking the fox to guard the chickens,” says Hillel Neuer, of the UN watchdog organization UN Watch. Neuer is calling on the U.S. and European governments to protest the appointment, which he says, “damages the UN’s credibility.”

Just more proof the UN, is worthless.

Oh, right! We hear the same argument usually from the same people who rail on and on and on about the ACLU....until those same people benefit from the ACLU or the UN. I have found in many cases that the most mouthy detractors haven't much grasp of the subject.

Care to add anything of value to the thread?

This is like having a Sharia Imam chair the UN commission on Womens Rights.

You know if you put UN in front of most words it's a negative, as in: UNintelligent, UNintelligible, UNreasonable, UNacceptable, UNaccountable, UNaffordable, UNamused, UNamusing and I will end with UN+++++ingbelieveable.

With that in mind I say we kick the UN people and their UNthinking organization out of America because they are mostly UN-American bastards.

Although NK should have been stopped years ago and that this is a very stupid decision, I still support the UN.

The importance of the UN is UNthinkable.

Other than emergency relief where they are feeding the hungry, giving medical care or helping to dig water wells in the desert, what is the UN good for?

I think this is just another example of how outdated and useless the UN is.

BTW, if you are a contractor who does business with the UN, you will probably get screwed out of your money because the UN has no respect for any rules of law and has no morality. It thinks it is above the law and if you do work for the UN, you probably won’t get paid.

The usefulness of the UN is UNtrue, UNimaginable, UNidentifiable, and the premise that it is, is UNsupportable.

So I stick to my original idea and we insist the UN, UNass America.

The UN General Assembly is a battleground, where differences can be solved without war.

The Security Council is also important, if the US were to leave the UN, it would lose this privilege of being able to decide on major events. China and Russia would gain all the power (which I wouldn't oppose.)

It is a regulator, although not much, it still does. UN approval still makes an impact.

It has prevented major wars before. Something that may have to happen again.

Lastly, it would look bad on the US' part to leave. It tells every other country you don't give a **** about anybodies interests other than yours. Result: Your International opinion plummets.

International Opinion is worthless really. If the USA were to pull out of the UN, and kick it off our soi the body would implode.

THE ONLY viable justifiable purpose the UN has is to give countries a place, a neutral location in which to air their difference and work to solve problems. That however, is a mission they've long "moved past".

Did you know that the UN had forces on the ground and in the area at the outbreak of the Rwandan genocide, the officer in charge was Canadian Lieutenant General Romeo Dallaire who asked for permission to put down the violence which he later said, his troops could have easily done.

The answer he receive back from Kofi Annan was to stand down, and all the UN troops were ordered to leave Rwanda.

As a result 800,000 lost their lives in the most brutal ways imaginable.

Look at the Darfur region of Sudan where again nobody did squat including the UN. Oh yeah they made speeched and oh stop the genocide, and did nothing.

The UN has a long history doing nothing when they could do everything.

So lets not be so fast to hail the UN. Let's be fast to say to hell with the UN.

This thread needs to be merged. By I'll repeat myself:

I don't particularly care that North Korea is chairing this conference. It's normal for any country to do that. Iran was elected to the UN commission for women's rights. Go figure. Countries take turns doing this all the time.

I think you are funny.

Name a single instance where the UN General Assembly solved a difference between nations that were about to go to war. lol, you can’t.

China and Russia would gain all power over what? The US military? US funds? What would they gain power over exactly?

UN approval only makes dill weeds like you who don’t respect the US Constitution some kind of a perverted woody with your “we are the world” crap. You are such a mark.

Like the US, the nation that is giving money to pretty much every nation in the world, needs to worry about whether it looks like it cares about the rest of the world or not. What planet do you live on? The USA has been providing security for most of the world for over 25 years while everyone we are protecting ignores their military and sinks all of their money into the social crap you support.

When the bad guys come bashing in the front door, who is there to give an interest? I really don’t give a crap what your favorite countries think if the US pulls out of the UN because they are the enemies of the US.

That is the way the system works. It is ridiculous to have North Korea chairing the disarmament committee, but then again everyone will say that when the U.S. heads up the torture committee. The useful role of the U.N. is to promote stability, not whatever pie in the sky goal is being set forth. It is a trivial price to pay for keeping NK from starting WW3.

Well I don't see what DISrespecting the UN does either. Countries take turns doing this kind of thing.

It's not like Iran being on the women's rights commission means that global women's rights now take ten steps back. It's a procedural and diplomatic gesture.

as yourselves this. are they being allowed to do their job effectively?

because as long as the present system of permanent members of Security Council and veto system continues, the UN cannot do it's job as a impartial mediator and enforcer.

people will just continue to like what they say when it's suits them and when it fits their agenda.

Hey, if you want to support the UN I think you should write a check.

Those of us who think it is a waste of our tax dollars aren’t “DISrespecting the UN”, we are holding it accountable.

Oh, that’s right, even though the US pays for everything that costs anything in the UN, we have no right to question it because it is a higher authority and supersedes American law and women in America would lose their rights without it.

you absolutely have a right to question the operations of the UN but the US does not pay for everything.

22% does not = everything.

78% comes from the other members.

78% my ass!!!

Who is paying for the Libya war? THE US IS!!!

It goes on and on and on!

you said...

i'm just letting you know you are wrong. a ceiling rate is set at 22% to prevent the UN being overly dependent on any one member to finance its operations. 22% is what the US pays, not 100% as you claim.

can you supply proof that the US is paying for everything that costs anything in the UN like you are claiming?

Why can we have nukes and they cant?
Always told myself that.
I just think we should get rid of em all.

Surely this is a joke. You wouldn't oppose dictatorships like China and Russia gaining the power over the world? You have a serious problem if you honestly beleive that.

Kofi Annan was not general Sectretary during the Rwandan genocide.
