He can't pick and choose what has already been committed to, and there's the rub.

and stop bashing the people who already pay far more of the tax burden than they should

Obama's appeal to the lowest common denominator might buy him many votes of the class of people who don't pay federal income taxes and want others to pay more but his rhetoric is buggering up the country

Ya know all polls aside, and by judging some of the teetering I'm seeing now from Democrats even on this forum over the past few months, and my own personal democratic friends, I think the President is in deep trouble in 2012. It's not just wishful thinking that gets me to this point, but something so thick you can cut it with a knife. If he runs a campaign trying to raise taxes, no matter how clever he gets at making not sound like a tax hike, he's done, and frankly a frigging monkey can beat him. I predict that as 2012 approaches a lot more are going to be jumping ship, and he nowhere near raises the kind of money he did for the 08 election, 30 fund raisers in the last two months included..

There are the die hards, of course. We all know them, they post here every day, but reasonable conscience heavy citizens won't elect this clown again, and no amount of race baiting is going to help his campaign this time round.

If the republotards can stay on message, Obama is done.

My father has voted for Dems since 1956. The only Republican he's ever voted for was GHWB in 1988.
Obama makes him sick. He's changed parties and will vote for Ron Paul.

GOP Leadership Urges President To Talk To Them About Debt Ceiling

    White House Snubs GOP Invitation

....yeah.... but it's Republicans who aren't being serious

Just so we're clear: Republicans passed a budget that would have solved this whole thing months ago. It died in the Democrat Controlled Senate. Democrat leadership demanded a "clean" debt limit increase - so GOP Leadership in the House gave them a vote on it and Democrats crossed the aisle to vote it down 318-97. Meanwhile the DEMOCRATS haven't put forth a budget for over TWO YEARS because they don't want to have to campaign on what they are actually spending - but we are supposed to believe that it's REPUBLICANS who aren't willing to make tough choices? The Republicans who were willing to go solo on entitlement reform?

To the bolded: umm, no, they, didn't. That was Cantor's idea, and it was to score cheap political points.

WASHINGTON -- At a briefing with reporters on Wednesday, President Obama was asked whether he believed that the debt ceiling was constitutional or whether the 14th Amendment required the government to meet all of its obligations regardless of the debt-limit statute.

Obama dodged the question. "I'm not a Supreme Court Justice, so I'm not going to put my constitutional law professor hat on here," he said about the debt ceiling and a question on the war in Libya.

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, however, is less afraid of wearing that hat. At a Politico Playbook breakfast on May 25, Geithner was asked by host Mike Allen about the negotiations over default and the debt ceiling.
Tim Geithner: 14th Amendment Says Debt 'Shall Not Be Questioned'

WASHINGTON -- Growing increasingly pessimistic about the prospects for a deal that would raise the debt ceiling, Democratic senators are revisiting a solution to the crisis that rests on a simple proposition: The debt ceiling itself is unconstitutional.

"The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law... shall not be questioned," reads the 14th Amendment.

"This is an issue that's been raised in some private debate between senators as to whether in fact we can default, or whether that provision of the Constitution can be held up as preventing default," Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.), an attorney, told The Huffington Post Tuesday. "I don't think, as of a couple weeks ago, when this was first raised, it was seen as a pressing option. But I'll tell you that it's going to get a pretty strong second look as a way of saying, 'Is there some way to save us from ourselves?'"

Sure does look that way doesn't it?
Climate, changes. It takes a particularly uneducated population to buy into the idea that it's their fault climate is changing and further political solutions can fix it.

The Democrat who led the push for a clean vote, Rep. Peter Welch (Vt.), sharply criticized the GOP decision while saying he would support the legislation.

“I’ll support it, but it’s transparently a political maneuver,” he told The Hill. He said the letter he wrote — and which a majority of the Democratic Caucus signed — urged Republicans not to play politics with the issue. “What [GOP Majority Leader Eric] Cantor’s [Va.] maneuver is about is playing politics with the debt limit.”

No, actually, it was a demand by the Democrats...
