Yeah that is a totally uninformed answer. That is the first thing I hear when I ask a kid coming out of their first day of civics class would say. Seriously, why?

A man has right to argue compensation for his labor, does he not?

    Today

China's open check-book has not been welcomed by all. 'Free Tibet' protesters shadowed Wen's tour.

More widely, human-rights organizations say the situation in China has worsened since pro-democracy protests erupted across the Arab world.

"China has actually moved back significantly. The human rights situation in China has not been this bad in a decade probably, if not more," said Sam Zafiri of Amnesty International.

An example, says Zafiri, is the detention of artist and political activist Ai Weiwei who was arrested in April, allegedly for tax evasion. Along with fellow activist Hu Jia, he was released just days before Wen Jiabao's tour of Europe.

"There are dozens of activists, lawyers, dissidents who are facing even greater restrictions on their ability to speak," Zafiri added. "So the Chinese government clearly responds to outside pressure… the myth of a China that is somehow immune because of its economic clout is just that, a myth."

Top down repression keeps the wheels rolling in China. There's a "middle class" under Kim Jong-il too.

Amen Krick, All the things that unions used to fight for have been incorporated into modern day labor laws. Major illness or injury leave, sexual harassment, hostile workplace, breaks, overtime, meal periods, double time, family leave. The honor roll of the things they used to fight for, are now right protected under the law. What's left? MONEY.

They're of course free to do so. But I don't believe it supports the conclusion that unions should be thrown out.

Of course. . . free to do it. . . uh huh

Right after the union protesters swarm the capital and wage an all out assault by every means, legal and illegal, at their disposal to stop the governor from doing his job of writing a balanced budget. Once the tantrum is put down all is copesthetic. LOL don't worry they were needed to protect the governor and staff.

The people who are pissed off at this should be pressuring their local politicians for trade imbalance reforms as well as import fees levied against China imports. If you don't like this, then do something about it instead of bitching. I have no problem with California doing this - it saved money, it avoided union issues and lots of other problems / red tape. Until the U.S. can compete on a fair playing field more and more of this will occur. Unfortunately, I don't see our Federal Government doing anything about it... so the trade imbalance will continue, manufacturing (despite Obama's rhetoric to the opposite) will continue to drop due to costs in manufacturing, and nothing will change.
“I think if Thomas Jefferson were looking down, the author of the Bill of Rights, on what’s being proposed here, he’d agree with it. He would agree that the First Amendment cannot be absolute.” - Chuck Schumer (D). Yet, Madison and Mason wrote the Bill of Rights, according to Sheila Jackson Lee, 400 years ago. Yup, it's a fact.

That's their right too. It's a free country. The citizens of California are more than free to protest and redress the government. In fact, it's one of the most important aspects.

California was free to do as it liked. It did so. A lot of its people didn't necessarily think it was right, and they protested. That's their right to. All within the rights of the individual. I don't see what your temper tantrum here is just because people exercised rights. It's called freedom, get used to it.
