Senate Confirms Panetta as Next Defense Secretary

Its DONE! And its not too bad

WASHINGTON -- The Senate has unanimously approved the nomination of Leon Panetta to be the next Pentagon chief.
Panetta will replace Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who is retiring June 30 after 4 1/2 years on the job through the administrations of George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
Panetta currently is CIA director. He has served in the House as a California congressman, headed the Budget Committee and was director of the Office of Management and Budget. He also was chief of staff to former President Bill Clinton.

Bob Gates is one of the best SecDefs of all time. Hope Panetta fills his shoes capably.
Nobody who wins a war indulges in a bifurcated definition of victory. War is a political act; victory and defeat have meaning only in political terms. A country incapable of achieving its political objectives at an acceptable cost is losing the war, regardless of battlefield events.

Bifurcating victory (e.g. winning militarily, losing politically) is a useful salve for defeated armies. The "stab in the back" narrative helped take the sting out of failure for German generals after WWI and their American counterparts after Vietnam.

All the same, it's nonsense. To paraphrase Vince Lombardi, show me a political loser, and I'll show you a loser.

He can be in charge of the drawdown and budget cuts.
