Nobody who wins a war indulges in a bifurcated definition of victory. War is a political act; victory and defeat have meaning only in political terms. A country incapable of achieving its political objectives at an acceptable cost is losing the war, regardless of battlefield events.

Bifurcating victory (e.g. winning militarily, losing politically) is a useful salve for defeated armies. The "stab in the back" narrative helped take the sting out of failure for German generals after WWI and their American counterparts after Vietnam.

All the same, it's nonsense. To paraphrase Vince Lombardi, show me a political loser, and I'll show you a loser.

Sergey Brin and a bunch of other smart people came up with this grand thing. It's called GOOGLE. It's a best practice to check a statement for factual-ity before making it.

Without Firefox's spell check and Word's spell check, I'd be totally boned.

Even if he never served in the military it really doesn't matter. You don't need to have served in the military to be a civilian leader. Dick Cheney, neocon hero, never wore a uniform, Eisenhower (the military genius) had two secdef who never served. I think Nixon's didn't either.

I agree. For instance Don Rumsfeld wore a uniform at one point, and we all saw how great he was as a SecDef.

However, I believe on the whole that it is a plus for a SecDef to have served in uniform so that he can better identify with the folks that he is meant to represent.

Actually he was a good Defense Secretary under Bush Sr. That man cut so much waste he deserved a medal.

Yeah but the 2nd time around will be what he is generally remembered for.

BTW it was Ford, not Bush sr.
