The nation building will happen no matter how many troops we pull

Unlike Obama, they don't have to worry about the geopolitical implications, the budgetary implications, or prioritizing the war against more pressing concerns.

The buck stops with the president, and his Afghanistan policy has been a catastrophuck.

Maybe if he would listen to the military it would be better. This is now Obama's war

Look throughout recent history and identify where Politicians have fully given the Military what 'they' say is needed for a conflict/war. Commanders will always require more men, more time, more power etc. The Politician has to look wider and incorporate or factor in, many more parts to the jigsaw.

I'm curious to know if anyone else has kinda lost their support for these wars.

Afghanistan has been going on for 10 years. We will never win it officially, its the longest war we've ever been in, isn't it time to leave? Not totally, but a lot of troops can come home. If an organized militia forms and wants to harm us, we go after them, but damn, this war is costing billions upon billions of dollars and is keeping families apart and for what? So Karzai and the afghan gov't can steal from people?

    Bring these troops home.

Because you're telling the enemy that all they have to do is chill, until you leave; thereby conserving their energy for a post-U.S.-presence Afghanistan.

    That kind of talking publicly?
No, more like telling the bad guys that you're going to cut-n-run.

I didn't. I realize--just like Iraq in '91--if we didn't finish what we started, we would just be going back in a few years, to start all over, from scratch and lose even more people in the process.

What did we go to finish?? When will we be done? When can these troops come home? We've beaten back the Taliban a few hundred years, same with al queda, when can we go? It's not the average soilder doing much anymore, it's all special ops guys. Everyone else can come home in my opinion.

In terms of Afghanistan IMO it was initially a totally justified conflict. The trouble came once the coalition took their eye off the ball and invaded Iraq. Much like what happened after the initial phase where we thought the job was done will happen again to some degree. Afghanistan being a 'Tribal' society does not allow for a conventional comparative study, the study would simply draw out all that is so dissimilar-so a pointless exercise. We can hope that a corrupt Karzai administration will be able, and strong enough, to hold the desired amount of provinces to keep a semblance of order, Afghans order not a Westernised version. My inclination is it will hold together for however long the Afghan people are tired of his particular regime then the cycle repeats.

After we leave, it will be as if we were never there...and, we'll be heading back in 5, 10, 20 years to start all over again.

It all sounds fine and good to pack everyone up and bring them home, now; when we go back, a brand new batch of kids will have to totally relearn--the hard way--how to fight this enemy.
