US troops coming home? Obama to say on Wednesday

Re: President Obama To Announce Details of Afghanistan Strategy On Wednesday

Oh, I see now. Thanks for the clarification.

First off, “slave labor” is a term nutty liberals like you overuse. I’m not saying it doesn’t exist, I’m just saying you overuse it and abuse it.

China doesn’t need to pay pensions and healthcare benefits for life like we do in the US.

China doesn’t have unions that collect billions of dollars each year in union dues to buy their political representative.

China is becoming more capitalist every day and the US is becoming more socialist every day. Look how that is working out for us and for them.

The US can’t remain free while taking total control over industry. It just can’t happen. The US government needs to stop protecting unions and allow American workers the opportunity to compete with the Chinese.

This won’t bring guaranteed pensions and retirement/medical benefits to everyone but it will allow us to compete once again.

Slave labor is not hyperbole or overused when discussing China. And you make a valid point concerning health care ebenfits, which is a good reason for a single payer system, as it would remove healthcare from workplace.

The US hasn't taken control of industry, nor have I suggested they should. I merely point out that they can't fix what they don't control, and it is kind of silly to think they can.

Out sourcing, look where manufacturing is today. We don't make much here.

eh?

If the U.S. manufacturing sector were a separate country, it would be tied with Germany as the world's third largest economy. It would also be larger than the entire economies of India and Russia combined. As much as we hear about the "demise of U.S. manufacturing," and how we are a country that "doesn't produce anything anymore," and how we have "outsourced our production to China," the U.S. manufacturing sector is alive and well, and the U.S. is still the largest manufacturer in the world.

Prof, if you read that article, you'd see that most didn't support it because they wanted more. A public option is not a single payer system.

Poll: Broad majority support start of Afghan troop withdrawal

"A broad majority of Americans support President Obama's plan to start withdrawing troops from Afghanistan this year, according to a new Gallup poll released Wednesday.

According to the poll, 72 percent of Americans generally favor Obama's plan to withdraw 10,000 troops from Afghanistan this year and 20,000 more by the end of the summer of 2012 while 23 percent are against it. The poll also found that five percent have no opinion. Eighty-seven percent of Democrats generally favor the plan while 11 percent oppose it. Amongst Republicans, 50 percent generally favor the strategy while 43 percent oppose it."

I wonder how the Afghanis performed...

The assault ended only after NATO helicopters joined the battle, killing three of the insurgents on the hotel’s roof. Still, NATO officials took a more sanguine view of the performance of the Afghan police, saying that they had fought well, once they had their forces arrayed at the scene. “They acquitted themselves pretty well — it could have been a whole lot worse,” said a Western official.

But for the hotel guests, many of whom jumped over the perimeter walls, plunged into irrigation ditches or cowered in closets to escape the attackers, the police response was not only slow, but also cowardly. Several witnesses said police officers ran away or refused to shoot.

Guests milling outside the hotel on Wednesday morning said that without the assistance of the NATO forces, the mayhem would have gone on much longer.

“The main question in Kabul, and on the cusp of transition, is, Are they ready?” said another Western official here, referring to the police. “The Intercontinental attack introduces doubt, and if the transition is supposed to be based on the security conditions, then the conditions haven’t been met.”

To look at something honestly, to interpret what numbers mean, is apparently too much to ask of some. The dishonest person merely posts links without ever trying to understand what is being said. Sadly. :coffeepap

Industrial restructuring, which has been characterized by a decline in manufacturing and growth in the service sector, affects the distribution of workers across industries, occupations, and geographic regions. In addition, deunionization and the declining value of the minimum wage in recent decades have affected worker access to health care and other employee benefits.

(snip)

Global corporate restructuring and other trends in the U.S. labor market also have the potential to exacerbate wage inequality. Corporate restructuring creates pressure to contain total compensation for many low-wage and
mid-level workers but increases returns to managers at thehighest levels where compensation may be linked to profits. In addition, the demand for higher-educated workers combined with technology will continue to widen the
wage gap between the highly educated and the less skilled.

When Factories Vanish, So Can Innovators

Losing an industry or ceasing to manufacture a particular product, in this case stainless steel flatware, has indeed become a fairly frequent event. Just in the last few years, the last sardine cannery, in Maine, closed its doors. Stainless steel rebars, the sturdy rods that reinforce concrete in all kinds of construction, are now no longer made in America. Neither are vending machines or incandescent light bulbs or cellphones or laptop computers.

Less noticeably, American manufacturers are importing more of the components that go into their products. The imported portion has risen to more than 25 percent from 17 percent in 1997, according to Susan Houseman, a senior economist at the W.E. Upjohn Institute in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Boeing Company, to consider one striking example, once bought all of its components from American suppliers, or made them in its factories here. Now the wings of several of its airliners are manufactured by Japanese subcontractors and shipped across the Pacific in giant cargo planes.

You may have to think this through a little more than usual. ;)
