Apple store employee seeks to plant union seed

Apple store employee seeks to plant union seed | Reuters

(Reuters) - An Apple Inc store employee has started a drive to unionize retail workers in a rare move at a company known for its near-fanatical following and cutting-edge mystique.

Cory Moll, a part-time employee at an Apple store in San Francisco, is working to form a union to fight for better wages and benefits and to address what he says are unfair practices in the company's glass-and-steel retail showrooms.

"The core issues definitely involve compensation, pay, benefits," Moll said, adding that he decided to go public with the union to encourage other employees to come forward.

 yes, because Apple store employees are so mistreated and so underpaid I mean pointing out headphones, bumpers, and sliding credit cards through thier iphones..... What a sweat shop. :lamo

Hey, I say if they organize and can hold this then yea more power to em.

Unemployment in California is 11.7%. He can make demands if he wants, but it's much easier for Apple to replace him than to deal with union demands.

Great, the 2012 iPad will cost $3,500.

yeah. i see his future as an apple employee a short lived one.

So what union would they join?

He's a part-time employee and he wants to "fight for better wages and benefits and to address unfair practices"? What a self-righteous, pompous ass. If he's not happy he can go work at Best Buy or something. A part-timer barely even has a horse in this race at all. I bet he's a dumbass who hates his job and is just trying to stick it to The Man.

Given the current radical right wing political climate, I would guess there is a fifty/fifty chance would be dead by this time. ;)

Why would cheer on people making it harder for others to get jobs, for products and services to be artificially inflated?

Terminating a union organizer is very problematic and you must be very careful what you use a reason for the termination.

It hast be for cause, such as a violation of company policy, theft, provable incompetence etc.

It is not easy but it can be done. I'm just wondering why someone who has been on the job 4 years is still only part time. It doesn't say much about his drive or abilities.

It is my experience that if you really apply yourself, you can work your way into not only full time but a better position than clerk.

I have to say that Apple paying $2 an hour more then the minimum wage for part time employees is more than most in retail.

You right about the termination. It could be part-time because the person only wants a part-time job.

Don't see the merits of this really. Apple has good working conditions and they try their best to remain competitive with Microsoft and Google by offering decent benefits and other extras.

Someone who is part-time is bottom of the rung, and yeah it sucks to be that guy in the rat race, but it's not because the company is trying to hurt its employees.

Why are people so against the worker side of the free market acting on their freedom to associate?

Because it's not the freedom to associate, it's collusion to fix prices. If businesses colluded in this way, would we respect their freedom to associate? Of course not, we'd shut them down for violating antitrust laws, and rightly so. Labor unions are essentially just a monopoly on labor.

In this particular case, it's especially silly since the organizer is a part-time employee. He hardly even has a stake in the fight.

It is the Apple retail store that the person is seeking to unionize. Microsoft and Google do not have bricks and motar stores that can be compared to Apple
