Palin's official Alaska emails to be released

The state of Alaska is expected Friday to release more than 24,000 pages of emails from Sarah Palin during her tenure as governor, almost three years after the documents were requested by news organizations and local activists.

The emails were originally sought to shed light on the then-little-known running mate of 2008 Republican presidential nominee John McCain. Their release comes at a very different time: as Palin, who enjoys near-universal name recognition, is contemplating a White House bid of her own.

The documents will be made available in Juneau, the state capital, in paper form. The Los Angeles Times will scan them and post them online, making each available in a searchable archive.

But wait, there's more...

Palin emails redacted by same people who worked for her

As they prepare to finally cough up more than 24,000 pages of Sarah Palin's emails gleaned from her brief, odd stint as governor, Alaska officials tut-tut they are going to withhold 2,415 pages from the public. Why? Those communications are privileged, personal or somehow exempt from Alaska's disclosure laws. Or so they say.

How convenient. Guess where the good stuff will be. No, really. Guess. Now, you might wonder, as I do, how emails sent or received by a governor or her minions on state time, using state resources, yakking about state business can be personal or exempt from disclosure laws. But state officials say there is the right to privacy thing and the attorney-client privilege thing and the "deliberative process" thing. Apparently -- and it was a shock to me -- there is no public's right to know thing.

Who made these decisions? It turns out state lawyers and folks in the governor's office -- where some, it turns out, worked for Palin but now work for Gov. Sean Parnell, who was Palin's lieutenant governor -- made the calls on those 2,415 emails. Not an impartial panel of citizens and lawyers, or folks lacking direct or indirect ties to the authors of the emails or any court. Just insiders.

My first reaction is what the hell goes on in some of these smaller states?

But then I got to thinking, a vindictive climber like Palin probably had a few folks working for her that didn't care for her...

We'll see how it goes.

sure to send those with Palin derangement syndrome in a tail chasing frenzy

perhaps we will get a ton of butter

yeah. Like this would be completely different if it were Obama emails being released, right?

Give me a break.

I am just waiting for the anointed one to release his college and HS transcripts

I wonder how long it took them to read and cherry pick the emails to be released? Bet it was a costly endeavor for the taxpayers of Alaska.

It's just good clean fun... helping bring a few back into the fold of thoughtful reason.

that response was completely unexpected

It makes me sick that things like this happen. President of the US or governor of the Rhode Island I don't care. Its disgusting. How, as a nation do we let these deceitful acts happen!! My god these people describe themselves as our "servants" what lies. what lies. Yet he who fights for the core reasoning in this message is often labeled a rebel, a vigilante a freak. Higher Power Help us.

too many bong hits?

I am not thrilled about emails being redacted, although that is a problem endemic to the U.S. government as a whole. It is really annoying that the government continues to pry more into the privacy of American citizens while simultaneously expanding the amount of information it holds back from the public. As for Palin, I could really care less until she actually runs for office again.

Alaska governor's office to release Palin e-mails

(CNN) -- More than 24,000 pages of e-mails relating to Sarah Palin's term as governor are scheduled to be released Friday by the state of Alaska to CNN and other news organizations.

The release follows Freedom of Information Act requests filed by CNN and five other news agencies that date to 2008, shortly after Palin was tapped to be Sen. John McCain's running mate.

Among the material that will be made public are Palin's e-mails dealing with state business -- using both her official account as well as private accounts, according to Linda Perez, the administrative director for current Gov. Sean Parnell.

A search was done "in an effort to capture everything in the state e-mail system" that would comply with the request, Perez said.

Then lawyers within the state Department of Law recommended what should be released and what should be withheld under state requirements, and the final decision was made by the governor's office, Perez said.

This is the first I've heard of such an event taking place....

So I have a few questions for my American colleagues.

Is it common place for states to release personal and private emails of governors after they've finished their terms?

If so, what does this accomplish?

Is it really nessecary to release the private emails of any individual for any reason barring criminal prosecution?

I'm sure there's going to be people foaming at the mouth to go through these, but in my estimation, there won't be anything interesting...

Hazlnut started a thread on this on this forum

I really don't give a damn about the 2 bit reality tv promoter but this should be a painful lesson for everyone. Anything put out on the internet is out there forever.

I think if you ever put anything into an email whether it is written word or picture that you wouldn't want to be public that you have to be a moron.

So what they are releasing will be about as fun as watching paint dry. They're wasting their time.

I think this is the third Palin-stuff-getn'-released thread? Two wasn't enough, Hazl?

Ok, I hadn't considered this could be first.

I'll contribute:

Vicomte de Valmont: You see, I have no intention of breaking down her prejudices. I want her to believe in God and virtue and the sanctity of marriage, and still not be able to stop herself. I want the excitement of watching her betray everything that's is most important to her. Surely you understand that.

Maybe it's because I haven't had any caffeine but I find myself entirely uninterested in what Sarah Palin wrote in some emails years ago. *yawn*

The liberal and democrats probably hacked her mail. I say release Hillarys. You would probably not be surprised of how evil she is and her hatred for America.

Actually this is the result of a court case. RIF = reading is fundamental.

One can fairly disagree with Secretary Clinton's policies and the positions she has expressed throughout her life and career in public service. However, areas of disagreement do not automatically demonstrate that she is "evil" or that she 'hates" the United States. Those are entirely different matters. IMO, none of her writings or speeches credibly supports either proposition.

A court case brought to force her emails out in hopes of causing her personal embarrassment and harm... there is no other rationale explanation.
