A page of the Canadian senate by the name of Brigette DePape was fired for displaying an anti-Harper sign, in the middle of the Senate Floor... during the Governor Generals speech from the Throne! She was immediately fired and barred from Parliament Hill.

"This country needs a Canadian version of an Arab Spring, a flowering of popular movements that demonstrate that real power to change things lies not with Harper but in the hands of the people, when we act together in our streets, neighbourhoods and workplaces."

A release from Senate Speaker Noël Kinsella said the page's actions constituted a contempt of Parliament.

"All employees of the Senate are expected to serve the institution in a non-partisan manner, with competence, excellence, efficiency and objectivity," Kinsella said. "The incident raises serious security concerns which the Senate will fully investigate."

This is a priceless act of awesomeness, and she is now in my book of people that did something godly. I don't now how many others think the same though ^_^

yes, because canada is a "big boy nation!" ^_^

Canadian pages, much like their American counterparts, are supposed to provide impartial, non-partisan service in exchange for the kind of learning opportunity only very few students ever experience. The page's actions on the floor of Canada's Senate were inconsistent with that fundamental responsibility. If the page had ethical issues about working in an environment in which she would be exposed to leaders who did not share her views/ideology--and Canada's political diversity guarantees such an exposure--she should not have accepted the position. Her immediate firing was wholly appropriate. Her actions were in breach of her basic responsibilities.

i agree with Brigette DePape that PM Stephen Harper and the politique of his political party are not doing much for Canada. many people will say that this is not the way to protest against Tory politique. so i think if she did not to this befojr the GG Johnston then perhaps nobody will hear about it. :sun:

what did she fail to understand about her responsibilities? her firing was deserved.

Ah, if we only had more 21-year-olds to tell us how the world really works.

Meh. She had 3 weeks to go on her contract and didn't think her job was all that useful to her anti-Harper agenda so I'm guessing she chose to go out with a bang. I say good for her and good luck in whatever she plans to do with her life. At least she cares enough to voice her opinion, unlike many apathetic youths these days.

exactly
she went kamikaze
had to know the repercussions which would follow
and recognized the opportunity to embarrass the politician was worth the personal expense of doing so
only wish there were more young (and old) people with such conviction

It's Canada. Who cares? I mean really? Who?

Wait, the pissboy was dismissed because of a Harp seal in Canada?

21 with conviction.

No, it was merely a "look-at-me" opportunity, and nothing more. Let the talk show circuit begin.

Sadly for her the people of Canada had just demonstrated a pro-Harper opinion and that seems to take precedence.

There are people with convictions. That's why she was fired.

Because I'm not Canadian, I don't understand the background or significance of this issue.

she was not fired for her specific politics. She was fired for breaking the rules.

Get a grip.

But it's so much more romantic of a narrative if the person fired did so because of some deep, personal conviction that has changed their lives.... bla bla bla.

She wanted her name across the internet, and discussions about her in message boards like this one.

She succeeded.

Other than that, her next "conviction" is to figure out where dollar-drinks are being served tonight.

They may have been her reason for doing it. I don't know. But the reason her employer fired her was as I said.

I just re-read my post and cannot see where I claimed she was fired for her "specific politics".

Do you have a direct quote of mine saying I did?

The Governor General is our head of state, and the Speech from the Throne is a big ****ing deal.

To put it into context: Imagine a person walking down the aisle of congress and produce a Anti-Obama sign while he is making the State of the Union address. Pretty much what happened here.

Senate Pages don't get paid ^_^

Who gives a flying **** what the majority think? I don't know about you, but I generally stand by my convictions no matter how many people may disagree with me. For instance: no matter how many people keep telling me that gay marriage is wrong, no matter how many people keep voting against it, I'm gonna keep telling them they're full of it.
