Questions surround feds' raid of Stockton home

Originally this story identified the reason for the OIG (Office of the Inspector General) assault squad broke down the door, served a warrant, handcuffed the man and his 3 kids (all under the age of 12) and put them into a police car for 6 hours (yes, 6 hours) was because of over due Education Loans - however that turned out to be false.

Quote Originally Posted by News10 ABC
STOCKTON, CA - A federal official Wednesday morning offered little information as to why federal agents raided a Stockton man's home Tuesday morning.

The resident, Kenneth Wright, does not have a criminal record and he had no reason to believe what he thought was a S.W.A.T team would be breaking down his door at 6 a.m. Tuesday.

"I look out of my window and I see 15 police officers," Wright said.

Wright came downstairs in his boxer shorts as he says the officers barged through his front door. Wright said an officer grabbed him by the neck and led him outside on his front lawn.

"He had his knee on my back and I had no idea why they were there," Wright said.

According to Wright, officers also woke his three young children, ages 3, 7, and 11, and put them in a Stockton police patrol car with him. Officers then searched his house.

As it turned out, the person law enforcement was looking for - Wright's estranged wife - was not there.

"They put me in handcuffs in that hot patrol car for six hours, traumatizing my kids," Wright said.
    ...

The official would not say specifically why the raid took place. He did say the search was not related to student loans in default.

He went on to say OIG is a semi-independent branch of the U.S. Department of Education that executes warrants for criminal offenses such as student aid fraud and embezzlement of federal aid.

So the Department of Education, an entirely unsupported (constitutionally speaking) portion of the government now has access to and uses an enforcement arm of the OIG to bust down people's doors, search and detain citizens?

I'd love to know the real reason ... if it's not a default on a student loan, what could the reason be to warrant a SWAT like forced entry, detainment and search of a persons house? Sounds like this might get interesting.

Hopefully this is fought in court. Besides that law enforcement shouldn't be sending in swat teams to break the doors down of non-violent criminals or alleged non-violent criminals.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

was this really the best way to handle any sort of criminal investigation/search with warrant? Is it the complete story? Often times they'll allow the resident to sit under guard in their home as it is searched. Typically, handcuffs are only used if the resident resists. Is this just a complete break down of "the system" or is something else going on here?

Sure makes one wonder what's next.

Are we going to find children handcuffed for interment love letters? Sometimes it truly is hard to figure out what some people are using for brains.

Logic seems to go out the window so much these days and is being replaced with empty headed action that make little or no common sense.

I still can't get over the Dept. of Ed having access to an assault team. WTF is that all about?

As a former college teacher, I can say that the Dept. of Education and it's student loan program is, and has been, a fiasco, for decades. Universities bring kids in, take their tuition money, fees, etc., give some some useful knowledge + a lot of useless and pointless knowledge, and toss them out into the street, and vicious workworld, often without so much as a 10 minute counseling session on where they might find employment, and then expect them to start paying back student loans pretty quickly - like their degree is insuring that they'll be in a good-paying occupation in that short period of time. Yeah right ! One of society's lesser recognized scams.

The more I read stories like this the more I wonder why I should even ever consider returning to the United States for anything more than a visit...

There's another thread where people are discussing whether our Democracy (Republic) will turn into socialism. Much more likely, according to history, a Democracy will turn into a tyranny. It began in the 1960s. Pay attention. Once it's too late, it's too late.
