I voted for it 3 times. (It was thrown out twice after passing voter approval by the courts).

I only wish it had been in time for the wife of a co-worker of mine. She had MS and was going down hill quickly, spending hours in bed everyday. Rather than go through the excruciating end of that disease, she OD'd on pain medication she had hoarded while he was at work so he wouldn't be implicated. It would have been a mercy had she been able to say goodbye to him, their children and grandchildren.
Wow. Stuff like that makes me so sad. Why do we try to force people to suffer like that and rob them of the most basic comforts in death? Not being able to say good-bye to your husband so he doesn't get locked up? Argh!

I can't help but think it's just selfishness. People unwilling to let go who put their grief above other people's self-determination. We don't get to choose how we're brought into this world. We should at least get to choose how we leave.

Thanks for voting for that. I hope someday I get the opportunity here.

    You're welcome.

As for why are people forced to suffer? Here, the Catholic church was in major opposition to the law. A member of my extended family sat in church one Sunday only to hear a political message. The priest asked for the congregation oppose the "Death With Dignity" ballot measure. She was appalled. She prefers her church be separate from the state.

The Catholic church was of course not alone, the fundamentalist churches were also out in force. Only the United Church of Christ and the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations were in support of it.

The Bush administration Gonzales v. Oregon - Death with Dignity National Center took it to the Supreme Court where it was upheld.

I'm glad we prevailed. People can make their own choice and that's what is important.

That is what's most important. Personal liberty.

He was quite a character. I admire what he stood for. Physician assisted suicide should be legal, provided the patient is of sound mind and the illness is terminal and/or unbearably painful. I also think people should have the right to kill themselves if they want to. I don't understand why suicide is illegal in some places. If we don't own our own life, we don't own anything at all.
