A high-level international commission declared the global "war on drugs" a failure and urged nations to consider legalizing cannabis and other drugs to undermine organized crime and protect their citizens' health.

(snip)

The study adds that decriminalization initiatives do not result in significant increases in drug use.

First the U.S. drug czar, now the Global Commission on Drug policy. It's nice to see enlightenment making its way into mainstream politics for a change. Click here for the full report.

I believe we have known this for since about the day after this war started.

It has made some Police agencies a fortune in increased budgets and confiscations from dealers and others.

Once again lack of honest education could go a long way to help reduce the use of drugs.

Kids hear the horror stories about Pot then find it's BS and think the same is true of all drugs and in no time they learn the truth and it's too late.

Your last paragraph is the most concise damnation of the current model I've heard in a while.

Well said.

How much did they pay this panel??? I would have done it far cheaper and told them the same damn thing. Man this is stupid.

Can't we all just.. Get a bong?

Oh and the answer to your question black dog is... Waaaaaaay too much.

But their report will carry much more authority than you (or I for that matter -I could have told them the same thing too). If their findings are actually heeded then that is money well spent. If our (U.S.) money was involved than I feel that that part is likely a waste since it will almost certainly fall on deaf ears here. Who knows maybe a few more countries may adopt a more common sense approach and over time our staunch resistance to the concept will finally erode, so there is a potential for long term payoffs (I am not going to count on this though).

Ending the war on drugs is dependent on other nations bucking our heavy handed influence and taking the lead. If this is to end, then it is incumbent on other nations (such as Portugal already) to take the first steps.
