New Mexico to end food stamp supplement

What about letting people go hungry in the wealthiest country in the world... well, #2 anyway.

what about letting those hungry people give up their smokes and beer and bling, etc to buy food instead of holding their hands out for foodstamps

I donate everything ot local charities and families in my town if I think I'm not going to buy it - I coupon shop a lot and come away with overstock and I can't keep it readily in my house.

It feels good too.
I can't believe the trouble this country is in with out of control spending. We have to make some serious cuts on all levels and yet some act like the world is going to end and people will starve if the state gov. cuts $16 off their food stamps each month.
Those people weren't even getting that money prior to 2007. It was just something extra on top when the state had the money to do it.

so what if they're not free. make a freaking choice. give up a pack of smokes or a case of beer each month and you can afford to buy condoms.

You realize your state is one of the worst, right?

Seems that we are forgetting the subject of this thread, removal of food stamps for the elderly and disabled. How much do you expect the elderly spend on smokes beer and bling? How many jobs do you belive are availiable for the elderly and disabled in (i assume) a primarily rural economy in the middle (i hope!) of the biggest recession since the great depression.

Wow. This is a shame. Corporations get bailed out, multi-billion dollar wars get waged, the top 1% get tax breaks, and yet we can't even manage to feed our own people. I truly worry for the future of this country.
"We" are not responsible for feeding "our" people. You are right to worry. But perhaps, for the wrong reasons.

Well screw the poor and take care of the rich. Seems to be the way to do things these days

I see no point in any state giving any assistance if it's meager and non-beneficial.

How much food can be bought and consumed for $15 , $25? That's what they've been getting. . . surely that's not actually enough to live off of already.

Where are the people demanding that they pay *more* than that? Why are people offended that such a small amount is being taken away instead?

That will buy a lot of Ramen Noodles:)

Who says YOU cant feed our people? YOU have every right and opportunity to feed the people and SHOULD. YOU have every reason and opportunity to engage in food drives, meal drives, to donate it yourself, to get involved. Dont wait for the government to do what you profess to believe in. Get out there and DO IT.

Just how is the poor being 'screwed'? And who is 'taking care of the rich'?

You dragged planned parenthood into a discussion about food stamps? As if the people darn it arent going to behave responsibly now that they dont have as many foodstamps. Now we will have a bunch of unplanned pregancies! Oh woe!

211.org. Look up your zip code. I GURANTEE you will find funded services that can hand out condoms for free.

This is what happened:

1.
who said anything about abortions? would it hurt poor people to wear a ****ing condom or take the pill? they hand out condoms for free and you can get the pill at the "free clinic". there is no excuse for these people to keep pumping out kids like litters of kittens and then expecting the productive population to support them.

2.
Though it's not happening in New Mexico, that I'm aware of, with all these bills killing Planned Parenthood around the country, the availability of free condoms and "pills" will be reduced, thus increasing the problem.

3.
so what if they're not free. make a freaking choice. give up a pack of smokes or a case of beer each month and you can afford to buy condoms.

You will notice, Oscar brought up free clinics. I responded, I wasn't out in left field.

I used my real zip:

There is currently no 2-1-1 call center serving this area.

This is not mine, but it is a much larger city than mine (97501/97504)

OK...my bad for jumping on you. I looked at the post before Oscars...someone else jumped in with the abortion thing. You got hit by the splatter...guilt by association. Sorry.

I take this topic very seriously...more than most people. I work with this situation every day. I give of both my own time and resources. It drives me insane how much we actually give away in social programs to those that dont need it. Its painful knowing that our system enables capable individuals to do absiolutely nothign with their lives and it isnt just for a year or two...its for DECADES. Its not doing them any favors. Case in point...37 year old male...11 trips to the hospital in 30 days. Med seeking. Enabled by the system for 14 years, then dumped. Setting aside the human tragedy for a second, 8 of those visits involved ER visits and labwork to the tune of about 1400 a visit. 3 involved stays in the Intensive Care unit at a cost of about 2500 a day. My math is a little rough, but for the month of may, the taxpayers in the county will be handed a bill for unfunded services totalling about $34000.00. ANd thats just for this month. He isnt 'fixed'. He will either keep coming here or go to another county. He is 37. He has been doing this since he was denied benefits 3 years ago (so none of this includes the cost to the taxpayers for 14 years). He will continue to do this. Figuring this to be an 'average' month, just imagine what this one person costs taxpayers in a given year. Imagine that number multiplied by thousands. Its not that we arent putting money into the social services system, it is we arent monitoring it, arent governing it, and arent careful with who gets placed in it. For every one of this guy there are at least as many truly needy individuals.

Edit...for comparison, across the city there is a 54 year old male...similar circumstances...trying to get into a secure psych facility nor for the 8th time since January. He also has been in the system since his 20's. He is non med compliant, doesnt follow up with his medical state funded) provider, doesnt go to therapy, drinks his disablity checks away by the first week, then is a sad panda and needs to be housed because he cant take care of humself for the next three weeks. He has learned all he as to say is the magic words and hospitals give him what he wants. If the hospital dares to say, sorry dood...not buyin it...well then he leaves, cuts himself with a piece of glass...and sues everyone that he has come into contact with since he got to the hospital.

If you guys have a question(s) for a person that is considered fully disabled I'm more than willing to answer questions.

To start with, I think it sucks more for me than it does for you.

"3 involved stays in the Intensive Care"

Why is this guy in the ICu? It seems a bit extreme to me.

Because he threatened suicide, claims to have ODed on NyQuil and sleeping pills, and pretend vomited blood. Told responding officers he was suicidal. Failed to respond to verbal commands in ER. Its not like after 20 years these folks dont know the game.

If you are actually fully disabled than I am just as pissed as you that there are so many that are NOT and abusing the system and stealing resources intended for you.

First, thank you for the apology. 'Tis a rare thing in cyberspace, so I appreciate it all the more.

I can understand your frustration. Being in the trenches, you see the worst of humanity. I have the luxury, for lack of a better term, of not knowing what you know, but for my experience with a family member and a few acquaintances. They are infuriating enough, but to live with it as you do, it would surely harden a person.

I also know people who have done everything right and are in dire straits. They have had to engage every public resource possible to keep their families together and fed. As a young woman, I knew many others who weren't lucky like me to have health insurance via a job as they were starving students in college. So, Planned Parenthood was their resource for birth control pills, pelvic and breast exams. They weren't sponges on society, just in need of affordable basic health care.

I understand where you come from. I would be hard put not to feel the same.

Edit...I knew I forgot something...he also said he ODed on Melatonin.

Previous stays he said he OD'd on Tylenol. It doesnt take much to land on a medical floor or ICU.

That is not ICU. The Intensive Care Unit is for something to with the body where they have you hooked up to all kinds of monitors. And the guy does not belong there there. He belongs i the psych ward on suicide watch.

Dood...please...

Most psych units do not handle med cases and do not recieve psych patients until they are medically cleared. You REALLY want to do this? I am citing not some faniciful hypothetical but a real patient discharged today from the ICU. By me. Geez-us...

Edit...OK...now that Ive chilled a little (sorry...it gets comical when people try to tell me what 'is')...

I work with 9 hospitals and in and out of network. Im not affiliated with any of them adminsitratively so I dont have a dog in the fight. I can tell you that it is SOP to place ALL suicidal patients with medical concerns in the ICU. Medical floors dont have the monitoring capabilities. Most psych units do not have the medical capabilities. Hospitals cant afford the liability of releasing them. Something as 'simple' (relative term...it can be devastating to ones organs) as a tylenol overdose frequently requires intravenous treatment for a prescribed time. That is on rare occasions done in the ER when there isnt bed availability in an ICU and they can be held for up to 30 hours. It is typically done in an ICU. Hospitals in your area may be different but I kinda doubt it.

Through out this thread I kept hearing people complain that the "majority" or "a lot of people" are on foodstamps just because they don't want to work or because they pop out children like its going out of style just so they can recieve more free money. I would like these people that claim this to provide proof of this.

I started out my wonderful journey at the county hospital, Parkland Dallas Texas. When I walked in I had pitting edema up to my waist. All I thought was "well I'm swollen for some reason another."

With in a couple of hours there was a team of cardiologists saying "Hi welcome to the cardiac unit."

I really had these guys running around. It took them forever to figure out the cause of this. It was not crack, it was not alcoholism, it was not a virus. It turned out to be a very rare defect in the heart itself called isolated left ventricular non-compaction.

At the time my heart was working with a 10% ejection fraction. That is not very good. It was confirmed by several different tests and methods. And I'm told heart transplant. That is some pretty dog gone serious ****!

So any hows there I am stuck in the county hospital with no insurance trying to figure all this **** out. I apply to Social Security for disability to just pay some of these bills. I have to go to a SS psychologist and I have to go to a SS internist. The internist orders an echo cardiogram. About six months later I'm on full disability. No fights no lawyers.

Now Today I have regular appointments at a transplant center and I take a butt load of drugs.

Am I disabled? I would rather think not. But I have to face reality and I know I would not be going to a transplant center unless they saw reason for it.

This is only the beginning. At one time, this country put aside a years worth of extra food supply for the population. It was later decided that expenses needed to be cut, and now there is less than two days. If inflation gets out of control-and it will-food will disappear from the shelves. Prepare for it. Or don't , but when the food does run out, don't wait for the government to save you.

That makes more sense now.

BTW Parkland, Dallas Texas is getting busted big time on a psych case right now. You can google it if you want to.

Parkland are the people that pretty much saved my life though. And I think they are getting shafted on this psych case deal.

Well screw the poor and take care of the rich. Seems to be the way to do things these days

The rich are taking care of the poor, just maybe not the way you like. You want the rich to give so much everybody ends up poor.

New Mexicans who qualify for $16 a month in federal food stamps — the minimum amount from the federal government — also get an extra $9 a month from the state to make certain their combined assistance is $25.

But the Democratic-controlled Legislature provided no money to continue the supplemental benefits in the upcoming budget year, which starts July 1.

The more Democrats "give" people the more they screw things up. Also do you think those 4,000 people getting the "supplimental foodstamps" on top of their regular food stamps are all old and disabled? Are they too old and disabled to go to food banks if they run out of food stamps before the month is over?
I can't believe you liberals are whining about this. what are you going to do when real cuts are made? Oh never mind. You'll be rioting in the streets, throwing bricks through windows demanding to be fed, clothed, housed, educated, bathed and have your butts wiped for you. Francis Fox Piven dream come true.

I hope the doctors are successful and some day you know full health. You are not alone and the system was created to help the truly needy. I dont begrudge you a penny. I only wish there were more resources for those that actually NEED them. Far too often it is not the case. I'll have good thoughts for you. Less benevolent thoughts for those that make it harder to help families like yours.
