Obama Administration getting ready to ditch the Food Pyramid

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The Obama Administration is getting ready to ditch the Food Pyramid, a symbol of healthy eating for the last two decades.

In its place, officials are "dishing up" a simple, plate-shaped symbol, sliced into wedges for basic food groups and half-filled with fruits and vegetables.
    ...

Obama Administration getting ready to ditch the Food Pyramid - San Diego, California News Station - KFMB Channel 8 - cbs8.com
When I first read the title I thought, Oh Finally, some sanity, then reality set in quick and realized they'll simply replace it with more idiocy.

    Bingo!

More waste of taxpayers money. We don't need no stinking government to advise us what we should eat. Like always, they've done more damage than good, wasted money and increased the problem.

The pyramid, dating from 1991 (Clinton Engineering), pictorially reflects the U.S. Department of Agriculture's guidelines on what Americans should eat every day to maintain a healthy weight...

While the government has stood by this regimen for 11 years, some critics say it's no coincidence that the number of overweight Americans has risen 61% since the pyramid was introduced -- and almost instantaneously appeared on the sides of pasta boxes, bread wrappers and packages of other food products in the pyramid's six-to-11-servings category.

David S. Ludwig, an obesity researcher at Children's Hospital in Boston, says the pyramid and guidelines focus too much on reducing fat. He says people are getting fat because they are eating too many refined carbohydrates, such as those in white bread, that make them feel hungrier later so they overeat. The habitual consumption of foods with refined carbohydrates "may increase risk for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease," he wrote in a May article in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Ah, the food pyramid or the food wedge, is not telling people what to eat, no one comes into your home and tells you what to eat.

    Hyperbole is your language.

People in the united states, At least in general, seem to be making very bad choices when it comes to eating, a little government poster saying whats better for you is not "telling you what to do"

But i suppose looking at this from reality, will earn me a long winded lecture by zimmer about how I'm a commie lib, bring on the lecture!

May I assist before you complete the book?
    Advise: To recommend.
Nothing was said about "(coming) into your home and tell(ing) you what to eat".

    Was there now?

    Wiseone: See what I mean?

PS. Your linguistically handicapped "Thankers" might want to contemplate a retraction.

Haven't nutritionists been saying for awhile now that the Food Pyramid is way outdated? So they are updating it. Who cares? Considering that you have acknowledged that these are simply suggestions, why the outrage? Or, is this another hyperpartisan attempt to suggest that the evil Obama Administration is yet again up to no good with their fascist and socialist ways? When you overreact to issues like these, it's hard to take you seriously on issues that actually do matter and that are worthy of criticism.

Some are saying it is dead wrong and the stats bear this out. Obesity stats since TFP introduction in 1991 reflects an increase of obesity to the tune of 61% in the 11-years following its introduction. That is not small growth... no pun intended.

    So they are updating it.

    Who cares?
People who would like to cut unneeded spending for one.

Why the outrage? It's not their business, and it's our money they're wasting.

Who overreacted? Jet, CC, Ipast and you... all thanking his gross misrepresentation of what I wrote.

May I suggest you read the first two posts and then perhaps you might consider a retraction for thanking a gross misrepresentation.

Talk about making a mountain out of a mole hill, I agree its a silly waste of government time, but still there are bigger issues.

I'm sure some are. The Food Pyramid was criticized when it came out too. Again, SO WHAT?

People who would like to cut unneeded spending for one.
I am one of those people. But I think we should cut the spending in bigger areas where it will actually make a difference and not in areas like these. Nutritionists have been saying that the Food Pyramid has been in need of serious updating for awhile. And no, I wouldn't blame the Food Pyramid for the rise in obesity. I would blame the fact on the myriad of fast food outlets and the lack of regulation on what these fast food outlets are allowed to put in people's foods. They are basically poisoning people. Of course, by regulating that they would also be criticized by many for being controlling and fascist. Regardless, I agree that we shouldn't be wasting money on stuff like this, but this one issue is an absurdly small part of a bigger problem.

The only thing I think that was a misrepresentation (and not a gross one by any means) was the suggestion that you were saying that the Obama Administration was trying to force this on us. That's not part of the post that I was thanking. It was correctly pointing out your hyperbole, which you are prone to.
