It could work, you understand, but it is a hoax nevertheless. The Republicans are no more fiscally "conservative" than the Democrats. The so called 'negotiations" are a public show, nothing more.

Meanwhile, we really do need someone who will step up to the plate and say, "Enough! We have to make some real cuts!"

But, my innate cynicism says that won't happen.
Not sure it has to do with "gullible". It's a bluff - or is it? You just don't know especially since there are enough Tea Party types now in the House which would make not raising the debt ceiling at least plausible if not fully possible via the number of votes. All the Democrats need to believe is that it's plausible... for the bluff (or the non-bluff) to work.
I think if Thomas Jefferson were looking down, the author of the Bill of Rights, on whats being proposed here, hed agree with it. He would agree that the First Amendment cannot be absolute. - Chuck Schumer (D). Yet, Madison and Mason wrote the Bill of Rights, according to Sheila Jackson Lee, 400 years ago. Yup, it's a fact.

Correct. They have to believe that it is plausible. I'm not so sure that they do, which is why I said they aren't that gullible.

Democrats understand political posturing. They're just as good at it as the Republicans are.
