NY Officials Want Schools to Teach About Unwanted Baby Laws

Unwanted Baby Legislation Proposed | NBC New York

The officials envision students being taught in public school about so-called "safe haven laws," which allow a parent to leave a newborn anonymously without prosecution as long as the newborn is abandoned in a safe way.

Parents do not face charges if they bring a newborn to a hospital, police station or fire station that is staffed.

Last weekend, a baby was thrown eight stories down a Brooklyn housing project trash chute and discovered hours later.
Do you think educating young girls about safe haven laws will solve the problem, or do you think lack of knowledge is only one of many issues at play in the decisions these girls make?

Re: NY Officials Want Schools to Teach About Unwanted Baby Laws

I find no reason to object to "safe haven laws," being taught in schools. Their are countless couples who are willing to adopt unwanted or inconvenient children.

I still think it's so sad that we hide the joy of safe sex from from young people while we all know that boys are out to satisfy hormones and girls want to be loved and it results in tragedy.

I have a reputation as a staunch Conservative and even tested as such in a test I posted. However I am a realist and we need to be real about this problem.

I had sex with my wife when we were still in school and it happens every day. More than once I held my breath wondering if this was going to be the time I would be forced to do something i planned to do at a later date.

So many parents pretend that they never engaged in sex when they were too young but the truth is it is an everyday event. And we act like those children caught up in this problem are somehow bad kids.

    GET REAL!

The truth is better than the results of pretending that it's something aberrant for girls to become pregnant before it's convenient.

Sex Education needs to be honest that it's normal and it needn't lead to tragedy if they know the the truth and how to deal with it when it comes up which it will.

We could in the process avoid countless abortions, that leave young women wondering what if.

I don't disagree with thorough sex education. I'm wondering, though, if deeper issues exist for girls who would hide a pregnancy and delivery like these girls did.

I think that we can short cut the fear of Mom and Dad finding out that their princess had sex if they were forced to admit the truth.

How many women that wear white at the wedding are truly entitled.

Most women and every guy I ever met would have to admit it is is a fallacy.

Unexpected children come into families every day the key to solving the problem is how we deal with it. If we keep it as terrible thing that only bad girls do we have no chance of solving it.

If we start off with honesty and teach reality we have a chance to make it better, and remove the unnecessary stigma.

Sex is normal and it happens and here is how we deal with it.

When I was in school we were shown Reefer Madness, and it depicted people going bug nuts from smoking a joint. The kids of the day went out and had a few puffs and found they were lied to. And the drug culture grew out of the lies. "If they lied to me about pot what else did they lie to me about?"

Next it was coke, and heroin. Lies lead to more lies and eventually they are exposed and the results go farther than the truth would have taken us.

I seem to be older than you by a generation, and in my day our parents were from WW-II and we trusted what we were told because our parents were heroes for saving th world.

Reefer Madness was not yet a joke.

I'm 26. My dad was 23 when I came around. Not sure he ever saw the movie, but he was pretty active in some of the less severe drugs as a teen.

Re: NY Officials Want Schools to Teach About Unwanted Baby Laws

My dear young person I was 26 about 36 years ago that makes me 62 and I lived though the summer of love in 67 and was in San Fransisco that year during the summer of love and was pegged as a narc because of my hair cut.

i never got into the drug thing because I was a fan of Joe Friday, Just the facts mam, and so I may have a better prospective of the time than even your Dad.

I have a child who is almost old enough to be your mother.

I have been in politics and the media long enough to have a different point of view than someone who could be a grandchild.

Things were not the same back in the 50s and 60s as they are today, trust me we have all changed and learned from past mistakes, and misjudgements.

I know what I am talking about, because I lived it, and I see what is going on today.

I guess the janitor is sick of unplugging the change room toilets...

It's pretty sad that this type of thing will only further encourage young boys and girls to be irresponsible and to not care about getting pregnant and to not treat that fetus as a human unless you allow it to be born.
