Proposed Book Club Itinerary

Book 1:

The Mosquito Coast, by Paul Theroux
Fiction, 1982 (1983 American Book Award Nominee)

We'll read this book from now (January 15) until Saturday, Jan 31.
On that date, we'll start a discussion thread about it.

Book 2:

Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal, by Christopher Moore
Fiction, 2002.

We'll read this book from Feb 1 and finish on Saturday, February 14. We'll have the discussion thread on Sat, Feb 14.

If you have a suggestion for future book club selections, please post them in this thread:
http://www.debatepolitics.com/book-nook/42362-dp-book-club.html

In order to suggest a book, you must have participated in book club already.
Anybody is welcome to join in and read these books and participate in the discussions; you don't have to post that you're doing it. Just jump right in.

Thanks! I think this will be fun!

Suggest it there ^

I'd like, as I mentioned when I originally conceived the idea, to line up the first two months' worth of books, and after two months we'll re-assess the book club and decide if we want to continue.
So if you and one other person each recommend a book, then I'll put them in this 'ere itinerary, and we'll be in business. We'll have two months' worth.

Okay I'm in for the first book. I'll not be able to play on the second cause I'll be traveling throughout PA and MD during that time on business.

I never need a reason to go to Books A Million, but this time I actually have one. Yay for literacy!

Lerxt, I still highly recommend the second book. With your sense of humor, I am positive you will love it. Even if you can't participate in the thread, grab it anyway.

Seriously.

Back from BAM, got The Mosquito Coast as well as The Prize by Daniel Yergen and The Middle East and Islamic World READER by Gettleman and Schaar. I got the READER because it's a series of concise articles on a huge list of Middle Eastern and Islam subjects and great for giving direction for further research.

Wow, you may be the first one to have gotten the book.
I'm gonna go get a copy this weekend.
I lent mine out long ago, and never got it back.
I know who has it, but... it's not worth the hassle.
I'm just going to buy a new one.

I did the exact same thing with my copy of Lamb. I ordered them both Online yesterday so that I should get them by monday or tuesday.

Great idea. I will participate in the future, have a lot on at the moment. If future books are announced as far in advance as possible please, this will allow some [me] plenty of notice to get the book from the library [i never buy fictional books].

Paul.

Paul.

Yes, we hope to get next month's book schedule settled soon, and I will post that here, hopefully within the week.

This Saturday, Jan 31, is the day we can begin discussion of The Mosquito Coast.
After that, we can begin reading Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal.

I recommend we read that one for 2 weeks, and then start discussion on it on... let's say Saturday the 15th (since Friday's not only a workday but also Valentine's Day, and many of us probably have plans).

If that's amenable to everyone.
If anyone needs more time to finish The Mosquito Coast, speak up. We could always wait another week. i know some folks got into this a little late.

I won't be done by Sat. Haven't even gotten the book yet from the library though I should be able to get it sometime this week. But that's ok. Feel free to not wait for me if everyone else is ready.

I dunno, I don't think everybody else is.
Some people who claim they want to participate just heard about the book club last week.

Let's wait until Feb 7th to have the discussion.
That will be 3 weeks, and that's plenty of time.
Then we'll do Tucker's book from Feb 7th until Feb 27th.
That'll be a Saturday, and we can start the discussion then.

Three weeks seems a more reasonable period of time, considering that it might take some people a week even to obtain the book, and then two weeks to read it.

New, Amended Itinerary:

The Mosquito Coast

Between now and Saturday, Feb 7th

Discussion thread to begin on Feb 7th.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal
Terrific! I can make this deadline! :2wave:
This is good for me. I ordered Mosquito Coast online, and apparently, I'm a total dumbass. The version I ordered was something called a "Penguin Reader" which is like the Cliff Notes version for retards.
So I won't get the real version 'till friday. I should still finish it by Monday or so, but I like the fact that I'll have extra time.
As far as the 7th goes, I'll have to wait until the 8th to enter the discussion because I'm taking the GRE that day and after that, I'm going to veg out.
I want in, but I am not making my next trip to Taipei until the weekend of March 14-15. Hopefully, by then there will be a 2-3 month itinery of books and I can pick up most or all on that trip.
Thanks.
I hope so. If not, one of us will need to start the thread on Saturday. I won't be around, but if it isn't up by Sunday, I'll start a thread on Mosquito Coast.
I'll be away most of Saturday, but I'll be here in the morning to get the ball rolling.......if I need to.
Has anyone heard from our Librarian? She usually doesn't stay away this long.
From what I understand she's done here, for now. She may be back later. Sadly, I didn't take her very seriously at the time. I wish I had. I might have been able to at least try harder at convincing her to stick around. I honestly thought whatever she'll be back in a day or so.
Dang, I just read the "hiatus" thread. I had no idea. :(
I feel bad for her. She sounds pretty shaken up. I sent her a message asking her to at least participate as the "Librarian" for this thread.
No personal information, just the topic of the Mosquito Coast.
We'll see :shrug:
On that note, I'm retracting my offer to get the ball rolling. I'm going to wait and see a bit longer.
..........and I'm not quite done with the book...going to finish now. :3oops:
