What Are You Reading Right Now?

Good morning, countryboy. :2wave:

:agree:  I haven't read a Robin Hobbs book that didn't keep me interested! I like fantasy novels because they counter the real life crap we are subjected to on a daily basis anymore!

Amen to that sister. :)

"The Barefoot Lawyer"

Very interesting, if rather depressing.

Okay, Lane...

Its definitely full of action and adventure, but O'Brian seems to gloss over everything too quickly. An entire battle is commenced and finished in just one paragraph and so on. It would have been nice if he slowed things down and go in a bit more detail. Since there are about 20 Aubrey and Maturin books, there isnt any suspense either, you know they will come out of it alive regardless of what happens. All in all, its a good yarn, but I wish he slowed things down and made the stakes a bit higher. 7/10

Heh. Thanks, Don.

Polished off:

LOTR (I reread it every several years)

Men At Arms (Terry Pratchet - funny as always)

Men Like Gods (H.G. Wells - extremely good, if you enjoy sci-fi that is half philosophy)

starting "The Island" by Aldous Huxley

I technically didn't read this book, rather I listened to the audiobook. But this novel is called Death Troopers, and it is probably the only book that has ever genuinely creeped the living **** out of me. It's basically a zombie novel set within the Star Wars universe. While it may seem a bit cheesy as a premise, the execution is very well done. I promise you that the story is very interesting, and only gets better as it goes on. So if you are a fan of Star Wars and horror, I highly reccomend reading this book.

Here is the book trailer, in case you want to understand the main premise of the novel:

"Island" almost done.

Staring "The Conscious Mind" by David Chalmers. Looks like a background in philosophy will help, though it is supposed to be mostly accessible to those without it. Focuses on something that I've spent too much time thinking about...

"I Am Pilgrim" by Terry Hayes

The best fiction I have read in years. I am an avid reader. I read everything. I read all the time. When I read fiction I often read authors such as Nelson DeMille, Tom Rob Smith, Alan Furst, R.D. Wingfield, Jo Nesbo, Stuart MacBride; spy thrillers, espionage, and detective novels usually by non-American authors.

I Am Pilgrim is a terrorist thriller that is one of the best books of its kind, ever. It takes place in many countries from the US to Saudi Arabia to Afghanistan to Turkey to Italy. The plot, the dialogue, the details are totally believable. In fact, in researching some of what Hayes has written I have found that much of it is based in fact.

This a big sprawling story that never pauses. Hayes puts his foot on the gas and does not let up from page one. It's a big book, a book for people who love to read. I'm about 2/3 of the way through and I just don't want the book to end. Fortunately the sequel will be released in May.

This book scares the hell out me. The well researched story seems entirely possible. It is not your standard terror thriller.

"Maskerade" (Terry Pratchett) on the side.

Not done with that yet, but also started another reread of The Silmarillion.

Powerful stuff, after the first 40ish pages, and immensely improves the experience of reading the LOTR books, which are already stellar.

Babylon's Ashes.

I am only halfway done with First Man in Rome (totally busy to read) but already starting another book:

About the World's Fair and HH Holmes (the serial killer).

Recently finished these three:

book - confessions of congressman x.jpg

book - right to reman innocent.jpg

book - police generate flse confessions.jpg

Now, I feel like I need something "lighter". Have just started this one. Am only about 20 pages in...

book - clary - holocaust to hogans heroes.jpg

This week I have finished the Andromeda Strain by Michael Chrichton, I'm now reading Airframe by same.

Next in the rotation is a non fiction book, a biography of WA senator Henry Jackson

This evening I will finish 26530335.jpg

and this evening I will begin 919231.jpg

I'm also reading two other books at the present. Something I try not to do. I read constantly. Too much just ain't enough.

6/10 - About half way through and it's pretty good. I would rather read about the Beatles in '64, but this is still pretty interesting. Topics include Beatles moving away from mop top image and becoming individuals, the Lennon/Jesus comments, George/India, Epstein's loss of control over the band as final tour presents major problems, etc... .

Timeline is a good Crichton book, also the Jurassic Park books.

Of Human Bondage by W. Somerset Maugham

There's a couple of new books that I immediately grabbed. Only cost me close to $100 for the two.

Totally slacking on my reading list too... I try to do a book a week but, my effort has been pitiful lately.

The Unfinished Tales and Lost Tales (Tolkien), to fill in The Silmarillion/LOTR. For example, The Children of Hurin is covered in something like 20 pages in The Silmarillion; in The Unfinished Tales, it's over 100 pages.

However, it is nearing time to chew through some more non-fiction. Not sure what yet. I have decades of reading on my list.

May I suggest "The Lawyer-Judge Bias in the American Legal System" by Benjamin H. Barton?

rouge one a star wars story

"Interesting Times" (Pratchett), now "Feet of Clay" (Pratchett).

"The Great Bridge" (David McCollough)

Devil in the White City was pretty good. Pretty suspenseful even though you knew the ending. I heard Leo DiCaprio is planning a movie on it. Rating: 4/5

Now onto the another book:
