MSNBC's Norah O'Donnell Plays Race Card on Gingrich, Colleagues Laugh At Her

SAVANNAH GUTHRIE: We played Newt Gingrich’s comments at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference last night; let’s play it again because I know Norah wanted to get in on this. Let’s play it in case anybody missed it.

NEWT GINGRICH, former Speaker of the House: Will presently sink in on people that, you know, shooting three-point shots may be clever, but it doesn’t put anybody to work. And what we need is a President, not an athlete. We need somebody who actually focuses on getting people back to work.

GUTHRIE: O.K. Norah O’Donnell.

NORAH O’DONNELL: I mean this was largely a good speech. Gingrich’s speech about not being the party of no, let’s be yes on this, yes on this. But I’m not sure what he means by this particular soundbite and I think it’s open to some criticism because it suggests that the President is an athlete and some people may suggest, you know, because all black people are good athletes. I mean that’s what it sort of sounds like to me.

GUTHRIE: Oh, I didn’t see that at all.

MIKE BARNICLE: Oh, I didn’t get that.

GUTHRIE: Yeah I didn’t hear that!

PAT BUCHANAN: That went right by me! Hahahaha.

JONATHAN CAPEHART, Washington Post: Norah, I will back you up, because my eyebrow arched as well. But let’s put this in perspective. The president does play basketball, he did, you know, do a three-pointer.

O’DONNELL: Well what’s this suggestion about him playing basketball? That he’s not doing his job?

CAPEHART: I know! I know!

GUTHRIE: That’s what I thought was odd about it as though we see him on the basketball court all the time, actually it’s the golf course where we see him at.

BUCHANAN: He just had that one-on-one with the fellow shooting three point shots and stuff.

BARNICLE: You can easily disprove that President Obama is an athlete by showing his first pitch. (Laughter) You can show that clip. He is not an athlete.

BUCHANAN: You can show him at the bowling alley in Pennsylvania.

GUTHRIE: Yeah maybe the DNC could do a whole ad around that as a counter argument to what Gingrich said.

O’DONNELL: Well what does that mean we need a president not an athlete?

BARNICLE: I think it’s a typical Newt Gingrich cheap shot. I didn’t read into the–

GUTHRIE: I didn’t hear it either. But we’re insensitive aren’t we? We don’t know.

CAPEHART: I’m with you (O’Donnell). It’s not like the guy’s on the court all the time.

Re: MSNBC's Norah O'Donnell laughed at by her colleagues for trying to insinuate raci

Norah O'Donnell is trying to figure out why former Speaker Gingrich brought up how ‘clever’ was the president's 3-point shot making abilities; is it to remind people that he is a black man or that he's not working hard enough on the American issues.

I agree, it is odd how far out of his way Gingrich went to disparage Obama. I think Mike Barnicle gets it right: it's just “a typical Newt Gingrich cheap shot.”

Re: MSNBC's Norah O'Donnell laughed at by her colleagues for trying to insinuate raci

I'm not seeing the connection between his words and Obama's skin color. Methinks people just try to find racsim in everything people on the right say.

Re: MSNBC's Norah O'Donnell laughed at by her colleagues for trying to insinuate raci

So, help Nora out, why does former Speaker Gingrich tell us that “shooting three-point shots may be clever?” What's the point?

Because shooting 3-point shots is cool and everything, but what does that have to do with being President? It's not hard to figure out.

People like Norah like to read into everything and try to pick out an obscure something in order to "catch" someone on the right being racist. It's ridiculous, absurd and a waste of time.

Norah is paid to read into everything.

However, the simplest solution is often the best, and your proposal that Gingrich is merely saying that Obama may be cool but he's not being effective, seems about right to me, too.

Re: MSNBC's Norah O'Donnell laughed at by her colleagues for trying to insinuate raci

No you see all liberals play the race card all the time.

Re: MSNBC's Norah O'Donnell laughed at by her colleagues for trying to insinuate raci

Where's the outrage at Norah's obvious racism as in steriotyping all blacks as good athletes?
All Newt meant was that Obama should start acting like a president. A little less basketball and a little more time working on jobs and the economy would be a good thing. The only racist remark was said by O'donnell.
Geeze they are really digging deep to paint Rep. as racists.

"They?" Sounds like one person, who was laughed at by her own colleagues. Doesn't sound like "they" to me.

Newt needs to shut the hell up though. Less basketball? Really? I think our president probably has one of the most stressful jobs on the planet, I think making sure he takes some time to relax is vitally important. The last thing we'd want is a man with the big red button to snap one day because that *&$(ing Senate *($#'d things up FOR THE LAST TIME AARRGH DIE RUSSIA *push button blow up world*

Sorry, I meant they as liberals in general.
Did you give Bush the same curtisy when it came to his golf? or do you think there was less chance that he would've hit the "big red button'.

I didn't even know Bush played golf, but I never particularly cared about the time he spent at his ranch.

Edit: I guess my point is that I don't really care about or pay attention to what presidents do in their free time that they deserve so greatly. I wish the rest of the country felt the same.

The Simplest solution you say?

The simplest isn't that he was saying it because he's a "black man".

The simplest would be that a politician giving a speech put in a rhetoric filled line suggesting that the President is more concerned about image than about getting things done. He does so by referencing a current event that happened no more than a week or two ago during the largest sports tournament in the United States where the President was featured in a highly publicized half time segment doing...you guessed it...THREE POINTERS.

To say the reason Gingrich said this was racism is like saying that when people suggested Bush wasn't worked seriously enough because he was "down at the ranch" they were saying it because they were secretly calling him a redneck hillbilly. No, they said it as a political anecdote suggesting that he's not taking the job seriously because he's DOWN AT THE RANCH. Just like Gingrich is suggesting Obama is focused more on popularity/celebrity than the job because he's doing things like TV appearances to shoot 3 pointers.

I'd maybe agree with you if it was just a random one off comment that had no baring in fact or loosely at best. But the man no more than 2 weeks ago was on national television during the biggest sporting tournament in our country SHOOTING THREE POINTERS. Its not a coincidence why Gingrich used that term and it had nothing to do with the color of Obama's skin.

Well the media was all over Bush when he played golf. He stopped playing after we went to war in Iraq. They were still on him whenever he went to the ranch. I didn't understand that because he was able to work from there. So if a few comments are made by Rep. about Obama playing too much basketball, is no different than what those in MSM said about Bush.
It's nice that you don't feel that way.

The media (as a whole, not just "mainstream") gets interested in a lot of things that aren't important. When that happens, I do something astonishing. I turn off the TV.

Sidenote: Anyone who uses the term "mainstream media" unironically ends up sounding like a crackpot regardless of whether their statements are sane or not.

So basically...................enjoy the juvenile insults Deuce has to offer at you crackpot, er I mean Barbbtx. Even when they fly in the face of common sense and tend to make Deuce appear to be the crackpot. ;)

Norah was speculating and came up with an unnecessarily complicated explanation of Gingrich's language. Her colleagues disagreed as do I. To repeat myself, the simplest solution to the question of why Gingrich said what he said, is, as Mellie suggested, that he was merely telling us that while Obama may be cool, he's not an effective leader. Personally, I disagree with Gingrich; Obama is both highly cool and highly effective. But I suspect most people can agree the reference to three-point shots was not racist.

Re: MSNBC's Norah O'Donnell laughed at by her colleagues for trying to insinuate raci

Did you see the black guy at the tea party interviewed by NBC? The reporter actually asked him, "You don't see a lot of black people here, do you feel intimidated at all?" Yep, she actually asked that.

His answer, "No, these are my people....Americans." Brilliant.

The msm is probably more racist than any other segment of America. They're so condescending toward black people when they discuss race.

Re: MSNBC's Norah O'Donnell laughed at by her colleagues for trying to insinuate raci

MSNBC is constantly peddling absurdities, so I am not surprised...

I really didn't get what Deuce was driving at. Is MSM somehow insulting? What are we suppose to call it? I prefer LSM (Lame Stream Media) but I was being polite, or so I thought.
