Tavis Smiley: It's OUR Job To Help Make Obama a Great POTUS

Tavis Smiley is the Black PBS talk show host who seems to have a chip on his shoulder about race.

The day after Obama's win Tom Brokaw seemed triumphant in the victory but also seemed hopeful that the era of race card playing was now over because White America had 'paid the past slavery and Jim Crow debt' in full.

When he alluded to that Tavis Smiley seemed eagerly but mildly indignant, like, 'not so fast, paleface....you aren't getting off the hook that easily.'

And Brokaw seemed crestfallen.

Today on MSNBC's Morning Joe, Smiley repeated and defended his belief that the so-called, "Obama Bargain" (Google the term with the name, "Shelby Steele") was never part of HIS mindset. He still intends to use the race card as much as he feels he wants/needs to in order to get his just due.

He seems like a poker hustler who's been dealt a straight flush ever since Obama's win. He just has that look about him.

Anyway, he says he feels that Obama CAN be a great President but it is up to US to help make him a great POTUS.

He speaks as though it is our JOB to help Obama achieve greatness.

Is it?

How can a slight, unmeritable, unaccomplished, insignificant, incompetent, inane idiot such as our beloved, benighted, and befuddled President-Elect achieve anything except irrelevance?

Americans' "job" is to tend to their own affairs, to build up families (which the President-Elect despises), to strengthen their private enterprises (which the President-Elect demonizes), and to, in the sanctity of their own lives, best achieve their own happiness (which the President-Elect disparages). The President-Elect's job is to shut that useless orifice in the center of his face and stay the hell out of Americans' way.

While it is certainly NOT our job to make Obama anything we do have a job as citizens to help make this country great. We can do this by appealing to Obama and asking him to do things that we think should be done for this country. Weather or not he accepts any of those suggestions and runs with em is up to him though. That is what will make him a "Great" or "crappy" POTUS.

However there is also something that we as citizens must understand.

The POTUS does not make laws. The POTUS can only suggest changes. The Congress and Senate have this authority. Therefore we would be better served by asking Congress and the Senate for changes and not Obama. The Presidents authority lies in other areas. Which is why I always laugh when I hear people complain that Bush failed in accomplishing (for example) immigration reform when it is up to Congress to make such a thing happen.

Obama's place on the historical scale of presidential greatness will be determined by his actions and his vision. In other words, he's responsible for what he does, or doesn't do, as POTUS. Tavis Smiley is trying to set it up so he can blame everyone else if Obama fails.
