(CNN) — A leading John McCain surrogate stirred controversy Friday after defending the Iraq war in particularly stark terms, telling reporters "the Muslims have said either we kneel, or they're going to kill us."

Bud Day, who was a prisoner of war with McCain in Vietnam and often advocates for the Arizona senator's presidential bid, made the comments during a conference call with Florida reporters organized by the Florida Republican Party.

The Miami Herald has posted audio of the call

"I don't intend to kneel, and I don't advocate to anybody that we kneel, and John doesn't advocate to anybody that we kneel," he also said.

Asked to respond to Day's comments, the McCain campaign issued a short statement from spokesman Michael Goldfarb.

“The threat we face is from radical Islamic extremism," he said.

Corey Saylor, the national legislative director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, told CNN Friday McCain should directly repudiate the remarks.

"CAIR would like to see Senator McCain come out and make a clear statement repudiating these remarks," he said. "We don't believe they're helpful at all in either putting out the campaign's message or winning the hearts and minds in the Muslim world that America needs to be winning."

What is controversial about that statement??

It is true.

And it's time everyone recognized it.

The fact that everyone doesn't recognize it give Obama wiggle room in which to mount his campaign.

He uses the war in Iraq as a platform at times and as leverage at times.

If everyone understood the basic premise of Islam there would be no question about why it is important to assure a stable Iraq after we are gone and with that Obama would have no position to stand on.

What's controversial about that statement if it is true?

Which Muslims and where? When did they say this and who actually said this? I guess we're to assume that the millions of Muslims in the world all agreed to say this in unison.

To put it succinctly, it's controversial because it's bull****.

Certain extremists say this, yes. Turning that into a blanket statement about the 21% of the world's population that follows Islam is ignorant and inflammatory.

Additionally, such statements only serve to validate and strengthen the extremists' views that America is at war with their religion. I for one do not want somebody who makes such statements as our Commander in Chief.

How is it controversial if he was referring to Islamic radicals? The intent is quite obvious. Do we really need to preface every statement when referring to Islam with a qualifier such as Radical, Extremist?

Obviously he wasn't singling out the moderates.

Except he said "Muslims". He didn't say extreme Muslims, he didn't say Islamists. He didn't say the Muslim Terrorists. He just said MUSLIMS want us to kneel or die.

Which once again brings up the question do we need a qualifier for every little thing said? Do we believe the intent of the statement was to disaparage and to be inflammatory to the Muslim community as a whole, or just to the extremists?

Seems to me it's just more PC garbage getting in the way of the real issue.
