Gender: | why do people get their news from TV it's pretty much guranteed to be completely utter crap. The television is a totally discredited news medium. Fox, CNN, MSNBC, whatever, they're all nothing but infotainment sound-byte ersatz knoweldge, destined for the waste bin of history.
Arguing over their tedious banal partisanships is like debating the merits of different flavors of cotton candy: who cares, it's all artificial disgusting crap that will give you diabetes. |

The mainstream news sources are pretty much the same, aren't they?
Before I had internet (which was not many years ago, actually) I just didn't get any news. Because I didn't read the paper. I hate newspapers. They're too big and messy and unwieldy. I don't like how they smell, and actually the feel of newsprint paper on my fingers is like nails on a chalkboard to me; sets my teeth on edge.
So. Good thing the internet came along, I guess, or else I wouldn't know much about current events.

I'll leave it to you to figure out the one that is giving us the straight information.
TV News is like the RDA for Vitamins and minerals. The RDA level is good to prevent disease such as scurvy or rickets and sustain life. TV News is good to keep someone aware of the basics, but one's choice of TV Network News programs determines whether you run the risk of contracting a case of mental scurvy & rickets or not. |

So. Good thing the internet came along, I guess, or else I wouldn't know much about current events. | newspapers are absolutely the best way to get news. they provide context and background without the gratuitous ratings-grabs of television. Quote: |

| the problem is that television news creates news where none exists because it has to fill 24 hours. God forbid they fill that time by providing relevant background information about stories, thankfully they fill all that time with moral panic stories for retards.
i'm not complaining about celebrity news. we all know that celebrity news is pure entertainment. what bothers me is "superbugs", "identify theft", "food safety", "snuff films" and all the other completely hysterical crap that the news assaults us all with every night. people think they're watching the news. |

Lean: Liberal Gender: | Re: why do people get their news from TV I get almost all my news from The Economist and Newsweek magazines. A little from MSN on the internet. I stopped watching television news over 2 years ago. I agree with new coup, it is a terrible way to get worthwhile coverage.
Well, excepting the News Hour on PBS and BBC, if you get it.

Gender: | Re: why do people get their news from TV yeah i've just about given up on American news media in general. I still read the NYT and sometimes the Washington Post, but I mostly depend on the BBC website and The Economist. I read Le Monde if I can find it translated. |

Current Mood: | Re: why do people get their news from TV I actually enjoy MSNBC.
With the exception a few programs, I find it to be a mostly reputable news source free of any particular bias. Mostly though, I enjoy it for it's political discussion- Hardball, Tucker, Super Tuesday, etc.
I use it as an introduction to news though and do further research online. I'm also smart enough to know a line of BS when I hear it. |

Lean: Liberal Gender: | Re: why do people get their news from TV That's cool that you like them, but I really dislike partisan debate shows with the exception of Face the Nation. Most of the others I find to be just about unwatchable. Contrary to how it might appear, lol, I really don't like arguing and I don't like watching people who do. |

I dont think you can expect too much from tv news It doesent really claim to answer every question just alerts you to events.
As for newspapers in the UK at least im more concerned because they all have agendas and dont really entertain alternative viewpoints except maybe the independent which although left leaning and alittle preacher does also have good conservative writers.
I think the problem people have is they just like to read what they agree with and when you do that all you do is read evidence to support your beliefs without reading the evidence against them.

It is neutral, if maybe just a teensy bit on the conservative side. It gives very comprehensive coverage of world events and is jam-packed with information.
Plus, it is published over there in the UK. You can get it a lot cheaper than we can over here. |
