what do you think about Obama's observation about media reporting and politics

He just saw that the title had the word 'poor' in it and figured Jon Stewart was a credible news source.

LOL. Well since Stewart didn't rebut a single point I was arguing, I am not sure whether he was using Stewart as an example of the talking points and dogma of the left or was attempting to rebut my post. :)

'Zingers' arent meant to actually rebut anything...they are best served as snarky smokescreens.

Obama took direct aim at faux news
insisting its menu of fare includes the meme that poor people are leeches who do not want to work
and he believes the way the media reports must change

does he make a legitimate point?

First, it's complete and utter BS that conservatives believe, or that Fox News promotes the notion that "poor people are leeches who do not want to work". The fact that both you and the President of the United States would resort to such dishonest political nonsense, indicates a far greater problem our society is faced with.

We've now lived through half a century of the great society and all the programs that came with it. Our government has thrown billions of dollars into education, welfare and a whole host of other entitlements during that time. If anything, what we've learned is that throwing money at the problems over the years has solved very little, while at the same time created a whole bunch of new problems that many people feel, including myself, are far worse than the problems the great society set out to fix in the first place. On top of that, nearly ever major metropolitan city in the United States during that time has been governed by democrats, who are the very people who implemented and have continuously supported the great society and the entire government entitlement system, and look how little has actually been accomplished.

In my opinion, it is not only classless for a sitting president to blame a single news organisation for the social problems in out society, but it's also a cheap cop-out. Instead of Obama and other liberal democrats addressing both the problems that 50 years of government entitlements failed to fix, as well as all the problems they ended up causing, they point their fingers at Fox News and conservatives to avoid having any kind of real discussion.

Instead of Obama talking about the millions of American families that have become dependent on the welfare state, and the insurmountable damage it's done and continues to do to our society, especially inner city families, he blames the people on conservative talk shows on Fox News for having the audacity to breech the subject...

So to answer your question, no he doesn't have a point... The media discussing the problems created by the welfare state, government entitlements and democratic policies, isn't the problem... Obama and those on the left chastising them and refusing to address those issues is the real problem.

Yes he is right and I challenge anyone to say that he was wrong. Hell most of the conservatives on this site have at least once done the same thing. Its laughable that you guys would deny this.

There's a large difference between exploring the idea of something and what Fox does.

Fox has a narrative they want their viewers to have...all poor people are lazy, all people getting a dime from government are lazy. They then barrage people with stories and images of people that are the poster children of how people can take advantage of the system.

Thats drivel...Media Matters rhetoric. Prove what they do is any different than what CNN does, or NBC, or CBS.

and the Democrats have a narrative they want voters to have...all poor people are victims of 'the system' and only they can help. Then they barrage people with BS nonsense about minimum wage , income inequality , and racism.

Stalemate.

Of course the REALITY is that most poor people are poor because of their own doing- but no liberal ever wants to talk about that.

If they did, it would damage their narrative and their voting block.

Never mind that it's their failed policies which have pretty much permanently enslaved the vast majority of that voting block into generational poverty and government dependance. Of course, they don't want to talk about that either.

There's no other political gain in this

You assume that he does everything for political gain. I say he did this for the good of the country.

I really cant think of another president that spent that much time commenting on news organizations.

I agree with CanadaJohn. As we know, Mr. Nixon had some nasty things to say about the media. And Clinton may have as well — he just knew better than to have his office conversations recorded.

Of course he wants to embarrass Fox News.

They don't need any help on that though.

I do not recall seeing ANYBODY at Fox saying poor people are leeches who do not want to work.

I'd be curious to see the Fox News reports that are doing what he claims.

[Stewart] still didn't make any argument for them saying that the poor are leeches who don't want to work did he. I didn't hear anybody disparaging the poor. Did you?

He can't fit everything into one segment.

I think the presidents with thicker skins considered it beneath them to attack opposition from the press. Obama doesn't seem to be able to deal with it objectively. Bush was roasted daily by the main stream media but kept a pretty steady head about it. So did Clinton.

I don't know if Bush kept a steady head about it or just that he had better things to do like run the country.

Why is Obama spending so much time watching and then worrying about what Fox News says or doesn't say?

Another thing, every time he said he learned about something by watching the news, which I think is 7 times now, was it Fox he was watching?

Doesn't that blow the case out of the water that Fox News lies when the President is watching it then using that information to make statements publicly?

It is a point of discussion, but I do not necessarily agree with how he guided it to be a FoxNews only issue.

Maybe because he named Fox News specifically. Could that be it?

His track record of telling the truth isn't so good. I would like to see somebody challenge him to back this up. Provide us proof of all these alleged stories. Not just one or two examples.

Sounds like he's tossing red meat to the Gruberites.

thank you for asking; i was so hoping someone would:

Thats drivel...Media Matters rhetoric. Prove what they do is any different than what CNN does, or NBC, or CBS.

While I agree that is Media Matters drivel--most Media Matters stuff is pretty much dishonest drivel--Fox is much different from CNN, ABC, NBC, or CBS. (I left out MSNBC because it really doesn't qualify as a news organization anymore.) Fox is different because it will cover the stories that is uncomfortable for the left leaning alphabet media groups. If you are a dedicated media watcher, any negative news about a Republican or conservative gets extensive coverage, usually lasting for many days, on the alphabet channels and also on Fox News who don't shy away from any news directed at the right.

But a thorny issue like Benghazi or the IRS scandals or Obama's bungled foreign diplomacy gets a quick mention on the alphabet channels, if it is mentioned at all, and then they are quickly onto something else. But Fox gives those stories a thorough airing and usually stays with a story until its conclusion. And THAT is why Obama (and most of the left) hates Fox News. It is the ONLY major news source that is really doing the investigation and reporting all the news including criticism of groups and people on the left and right. You just don't get that from the alphabet channels who dutifully downplay the negative and exalt the positive of the left.

So the fact that Fox tells ALL the truth about the poor and not just the politically correct version has to be attacked by those on the left. I mean we can't allow the carefully constructed lie that the poor are the victims of the greedy rich and the corrupt Republicans be exposed can we?

Of course the REALITY is that most poor people are poor because of their own doing- but no liberal ever wants to talk about that.

Income inequality, the fact that minimum wage adjusted for inflation is at a near lowpoint, and the fact racism exists is pretty easy to show using facts.

The idea every white person should be fearful of the "knockout game" or "flash mobs" has proven to be isolated incidents use to gin up fear on the right.

The idea that most people are poor because of their own doing is a pretty broad statement...so if everybody just worked hard there would be no poor people? Our country would just be full of doctors and engineers? There would be no such thing as low paying jobs? There will always be jobs that need to be filled and based on the function of that job they don't command a high salary without collective bargaining or other ways to give employees power.

Correct. I would add smart in there, too. They might not get rich, but they wouldn't be poor( by Gov't definition.)
