William Cowper’s 1782 poem “Progress of Error”:

How shall I speak of thee or thy power address,

Thou God of our idolatry, the Press?

By thee, religion, liberty and laws

Exert their influence and advance their cause;

By thee worse plagues than Pharaoh’s land befell,

Diffused, make earth the vestibule of Hell;

Thou fountain, at which drink the good and wise;

Thou ever-bubbling spring of endless lies;

Like Eden’s dead probationary tree,

Knowledge of good and evil is from thee.

Things haven't changed much since then. We just have new terms for it, like "fake news".

It's amazing that it addresses so exactly the current Media, and I indict the Mainstream Media more than the alleged Fake News sites. The ones listed in the Wash Post article included the cream of investigative reporting. That should point a big blinking red arrow at the Post as the source of FakeNews, don't ya' think? Not the only one. Unbiased news does not come from Oligarchic control of the Media. It's about dollars and cents and no common sense required.

Those who criticize fake news for Trump getting elected should understand that this is a molehill, compared to a mountain. The Gulf of Tonkin incident, which resulted in the escalation of the Vietnam War, was the almost the worst piece of fake news in history, and tens of thousands of US soldiers died because of that lie. The incident never happened. But the winner goes to the sinking of the Maine, which triggered the Spanish-American war. That goes down in history as a false flag operation that literally changed history, and the media led the charge to war there too. Propaganda is propaganda, and media whores will be media whores. It's the same today as it ever was, but what happened this year is nothing compared to what has happened in the past. Those lies caused the deaths of many. Just to keep it all in perspective.

Winner in the 20th century might have been the sinking of the Maine in Havana harbor, but winner of the 21st century was the Legend of Abbottabad.

When I hear leftists screaming about stolen elections I keep thinking "Remember the Maine, to Hell with Spain!"

So glad one of them isn't in charge...
