This happens in everything. Look at the journalists who actually dared to call out the doping of Lance Armstrong. It took a decade before they were vindicated. During that decade, they were black listed and unable to gain access to any of the cyclists in the peloton.
But, even with all that pressure, we still saw plenty of articles calling Lance a cheat. I guess that shows the importance of going off the main track a bit when looking for reliable information.
It happens yes, but it should not. With the Lance Armstrong situation there was at least some journalists that did some digging and others that had many questions. What is happening in the US, is basically the same that happens in Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia has very little official censorship... because the media does it automatically... aka self censorship. That is what more and more US media do.
