Why is this story even in the news? - 6 Passengers Kicked Off Plane At LAX Accused Of Being Unruly Claim Discrimination « CBS Los Angeles

You've got one side of the story and nothing else. The cops POV isn't presented, the airline's POV isn't presented and no other passengers have weighed in but a major market "news" outlet decided to push the story anyway. Why would they do that? Where is the journalistic integrity?

I'll tell you why any semblance of journalistic integrity is missing...it's because the "news" outlets are now in the business of fomenting outrage. Outrage sells, bottom line. If these so called journalists can put a story out that starts a Twitter and Facebook frenzy then more people click their page and their advertising opportunities become more attractive.

It's pretty ****ing sad.

I think we need to do what the French do which is stop classifying people according to race/ethnicity. That starts with the government.

Its yellow journalism at its best. Same crap different media outlet.

From the last two paragraphs in the story:

After arriving at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, witnesses on the flight told reporters the banned passengers were being disruptive.

Spirit Airlines has not responded to CBSLA’s request for comment

Racism will never be 100% eliminated.

Some whites will ALWAYS feel something (fear, loathing, alarm) when they see a groups of young blacks wearing hoodies on the same sidewalk at night. Sometimes they should, but mostly they shouldn't.

Some blacks will ALWAYS think (or pretend to think) that they are not getting a job or are being paid attention to by the police because of their color. Sometimes they are right, but mostly they aren't.

The main reason is that people like David Dukes and Al Sharpton will always exist.

From the last two paragraphs in the story:

So hold the "story" until you get some kind of confirmation one way or the other!!

By releasing this mess they created a situation where readers can ONLY speculate on what transpired and we all know how wild speculation gets. Hell, that wild speculation is what the "news" outfit is counting on.

The media is promoting it. Period.

Racism would "go away" if the media refused to report on things individuals suspect might involve racism?

Something "going away" and you not hearing about it because nobody mentions it are two different things.

THIS!!!! Stop implementing government sanctioned racism... why this is such a radical idea I have no clue...

problem is... if they do that , they won't get the pandering votes.

Predominantly white people should pretend that racism isn't a problem, and predominantly black people should just bow their heads and accept the status-quo.

Sure there will always be some bias based on race, gender, ideology, whatever. That's part of what we do as humans. But in cases like this a major media outlet is PROMOTING the kind of stuff that foments those attitudes and they are doing so only because it drives revenue.

You've got one side of the story and nothing else.
No you didnt.
"Witnesses told CBS2/KCAL9’s Tom Wait the passengers were removed from Flight 868 after a white flight attendant accused a member in the group of being a threat."
"fter arriving at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, witnesses on the flight told reporters the banned passengers were being disruptive."

The cops POV isn't presented,
The only thing that involves cops here is them escorting them off the plane...

the airline's POV isn't presented
Well maybe they should comment on the story.... "Spirit Airlines has not responded to CBSLA’s request for comment."

and no other passengers have weighed in
Yes they have: "After arriving at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, witnesses on the flight told reporters the banned passengers were being disruptive."

Well most of your claims arent true.

Good call.

A balanced story will at least have a reference to the investigation or a statement from the airline or both.

This is a growing trend in modern journalism, it stems from a left wing concept of "advocacy journalism", in this case fomenting racial issues as a means to 'raise awareness".

This is all too common sufficient to launch a story like this is in the US anymore: "The travelers said they were singled out and booted off the aircraft because they are black. "

Technically the reporter can make a lame claim to balance, with his "After arriving at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, witnesses on the flight told reporters the banned passengers were being disruptive." I assume that without quotes, the reporter chose the work "disruptive" over more common words the travelers would have used.

Good call seeing the imbalance

He had all he needed, and you NEVER hold a story waiting comment, confirmation yes.

What was needed was an editor who says "no go until I get third party description of what they did to get kicked off, or documented witnesses saying they didn't deserve it. In this case the reporter has made that decision himself and written it according to his interpretation without the full gamut of facts

Listen, I'm not saying this was high caliber journalism. But they didn't do anything wrong either. A journalist asks for both sides of the story. If one side doesn't want to talk then you go ahead and publish the story with what you have and explain that one side did not comment. If journalists ditched any story in which one of the sides didn't comment then all you would have to do to keep a negative story about you or your company out of the press would be to not comment. That would be foolish.

Now, if the journalist DIDN'T ask for the other side of the story that would be unethical. But that doesn't appear to be the case here.

Good call.

A balanced story will at least have a reference to the investigation or a statement from the airline or both.

"After arriving at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, witnesses on the flight told reporters the banned passengers were being disruptive."

* Report of "reporters" following investigation by said reporters

"Spirit Airlines has not responded to CBSLA’s request for comment."

* Report of Spirit Airlines declining to give a statement.

What exactly is the problem that makes this a basis for a "lame" claim to balance? The airline didn't want to talk, and those passengers that did want to talk said the passengers were just being jerks. If someone were to read this article and conclude it was proof positive of actual racism, that someone would be a moron. But it also wouldn't be the article's fault that they did it.

This is exactly the kind of brief article that covers the bases but doesn't go further that one ought to expect from a local media outlet.

I think we need to do what the French do which is stop classifying people according to race/ethnicity. That starts with the government.

If only it were possible. The problem is when a store is robbed and a person is at large a description is necessary. But it would be nice if it wasn't necessary on every form and survey you fill out. I think industry puts more emphasis on profiling than any one else. I think it is a necessity for accurate marketing unfortunately. You cannot market the same way to men as women with much success. This goes with ethnic and even financial differences. Advertising for a Ferrari in neighborhoods that cannot afford them is useless.

Its yellow journalism at its best. Same crap different media outlet.

But look at the financial rewards of playing the race card for the media. A small paragraph in the middle of the local paper can turn into multi-billion dollar front page news if you can spin it into a hate crime or drop the race card. You can even sucker our current president into getting involved.

Racism would "go away" if the media refused to report on things individuals suspect might involve racism?

Something "going away" and you not hearing about it because nobody mentions it are two different things.

The fault lies with you and I not the media. We cannot expect the media to turn down billions of dollars generate by you and I when we purchasing their information. We don't buy they don't print. It is that simple.

I think we need to do what the French do which is stop classifying people according to race/ethnicity. That starts with the government.

I have long wondered why there haven't been any protests about the classification. On the other hand it would be rather silly to stop the information collection.

Please be accurate. I never said lame.

While I will agree with your statement, you can't ignore that the media is also bias when it comes to showing positive stories versus negative stories about the minority community. The media has always been a instrument in the racial tension in this country (both left and right). We just choose which stories to embrace to satisfy our prejudice appetites.

Racism would "go away" if the media refused to report on things individuals suspect might involve racism?

That's what the "part of" was all about.

Part of why racism won't go away....(is)......The media is promoting it. Period.
So, it is a "copycat" phenom, people read about racism....and then do it.

Any sort of research available to support this POV?

Predominantly white people should pretend that racism isn't a problem, and predominantly black people should just bow their heads and accept the status-quo.
What is a "predominantly" white/black person? Someone who has 3 of 4 grandparents of the same race?
