Where did this myth of Chicago being a a horrible city filled with murders come from? Its constantly used as an example of a horrible violent city by the republicans. Yet they don't have the highest murder rate. In fact they are not even in the top 10. Detroit, New Orleans, St Louis, Baltimore, Newark, Oakland, Stockton, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Memphis, and Atlanta all have higher murder rates than the city of Chicago.

Yet republicans constantly mock Chicago, its used almost as proof that gun control doesn't work, constantly made fun of for having such a high violence. And murder statistics were frequently used as arguments against the black lives matter protests with them saying things like "why do black people care about police murdering them, when so many died in chicago last week/month/year" but again this is not Americas most violent city, and its not even in the top ten.

What is the reason behind the right wing obsession with Chicago?

It stems from Chicago's notorious opposition to the 2nd Amendment.

I for one, appreciate the fact that the publicity scares off lots of frightened wingnuts who are afraid to walk down the street without a gun tucked into their crotch.

Whenever I hear some irrational Conservative on DP say they would never go to Chicago, in general, I think the visitor quality potential has just risen a tad.

And yet for all that comfort you are feeling at not having to be exposed to those nasty conservatives, your liberal Chicago is a murder capitol. Someone's not seeing the forest for the trees. :lamo

It stems from Chicago's notorious opposition to the 2nd Amendment.

Heya Luther. :2wave: Well that is one issue.....here is the other.

There were at least 30,000 gangs and 800,000 gang members active across the USA in 2007.[1][2] About 900,000 gang members lived "within local communities across the country," and about 147,000 were in U.S. prisons or jails in 2009.[3] By 1999, Hispanics accounted for 47% of all gang members, Blacks 31%, Whites 13%, and Asians 6%.[4]

The Latin Kings have over 25,000[5][6] members in the city of Chicago alone and have organized chapters in over 41 states and several Latin American and European countries, including: Mexico, Spain, Dominican Republic, Canada, Italy, Ecuador, Peru, Puerto Rico, Portugal, Brazil, United Kingdom and others.

The newly released Chicago Crime Commission publication, "The Gang Book 2012", conveyed a startling statistic that Chicago has more gang members than any other city in the United States: 150,000 members[7] Traditionally Los Angeles County was considered the Gang Capital of America, with an estimated 120,000 (41,000 in the City) gang members.[8] Chicago has a higher rate of gang membership per capita than Los Angeles.[9] The state of Illinois has a higher rate of gang membership (8-11 gang members per 1,000 population) than California (5-7 gang members per 1,000 population)......snip~

Yet, the Demos don't want to talk about that racism between the Hispanics and Blacks either.

this is what i mean its perceived to be the most dangerous even though it isn't

A recent survey by polling company YouGov asked Americans what they thought was the most dangerous major city in America. The choice of the majority of respondents? Chicago.

Meanwhile this is what that incredibly bias article says about detroit which ironically, has the highest murder rates in the country

Contrast this with Detroit and the attitude of its police chief, James Craig, on gun control. Craig actually changed his mind on gun control and has urged the people of Detroit to arm themselves. Moreover, crime in Detroit has been falling all throughout 2014, and Craig attributed this to the fact that the people of Detroit are taking his advice.

Post 9, says otherwise.

its an interesting statistic, but it doesn't prove that chicago has much higher murder rate,

I also would question how you would even measure gang members accurately, its not like people sign up at city hall when they join a gang, all that statistic really proves is that crime "might be" more organized in Chicago than in other cities, either way Los Angeles has the second highest amount of gang members but its not even in the top 20 highest murder rates. Neither is new york city

When peeps talk about gun control and relate it to Chicago they are talking about gun violence and gun related homicides, not overall murder rates.

There's no question that Chicago sees more gun violence than the rest of the country. Using data on mass shootings -- defined here as incidents in which four or more people were shot -- we can compare Chicago to the rest of the country. Since 2013, Chicago has seen 207 people wounded in mass shooting incidents and 32 killed -- far more than any other city. But without robust data on cities of smaller sizes than Chicago, it’s very difficult to know how exceptional Chicago’s per-capita mass shootings are.

Gun-control opponents love to cite Chicago. So how does it compare to the rest of America? - The Washington Post

There were 12 killed, 43 wounded over Labor Day weekend. And 8 killed, 46 wounded over Labor Day weekend. That's hysterical. Homicide cops must be loving it. (I don't think it's a Republican focus, I think it's a people focus.) And I don't get it, either. Because you're taking 2nd Amenders, opposed to Obama's call for increased gun control, and blanketing them as Republicans. Republicans are a minority, a big minority, why blame it on the minorities?

Well its not just murders that makes Chicago Dangerous. Notice they didn't say much about shootings. We had over 60 for the last month alone.

and I bet big bucks that the shooters were not people who bought the guns legally or possessed them legally

The number twisting for political purposes is this country is the greatest propaganda in the world. I lived in Houston that at one time was the murder capital. Then there was Miami and the drug cartels all along the borders towns. The fact is the criminals move from area to area to avoid crack down from law enforcement. I now live in a small town that has brought in a bunch a section 8 people from Jersey, New York, and Philly. Drugs and gun violence has spiraled out of control. Per capita the last few years we have to be near the top right now.

You would probably win. As Emanuel (tiny dancer) blamed the gangs.

But I would note that the Kings real trafficking is Weapons. Military weapons and guns. Then the drugs.

Never let a crisis go to waste, huh?

I suspect he'd find a run in his tights a reason to ban some more guns:mrgreen:

Well he did bring in the TOP Cop from NY who didn't know anything about Chicago.....other than it was on the map.

So as you can see he never was about solving the gang problem or reducing the shootings in Chicago.

He knew Chicago was in a crisis so he thought a NY Political appointee would help take advantage of the crisis.

There has been 377 murders as of 5:13 pm today in Chicago this year.
