How Roger Ailes Picked Trump, and Fox News’ Audience, Over Megyn Kelly

That's the kind of response I expect from you. Do mind if I ask what the 'silly claim' is? Can you please explain why Trump is back at Fox? I think Trump has Ailes by the nuts and will squeeze them tighter until he gets his way.

Fox is a news organization and Trump is a leading candidate for President. There was never any doubt that Fox would continue to cover and interview him, just as other networks do.

Sorry, but Roger Ailes saw Trump was spending his time on CNN and needed to get him back under the fold for the ratings. It's all about ratings.

interesting to compare two of the angles here

1 - that it was a FOX hit on trump

and

2 - that ailes is backing trump for his response

did they not expect their own hit to be successful?
did they not have a plan in case it back fired?

i am of the camp that thinks it was a fair question - asking him to account for past offensive remarks - but perhaps unexpected that it came from Fox which I guess people assumed would be a friendlier environment (did all 10 candidates expect nothing but softballs?)

I thought the moderators were equally "unfair" in that they asked all the candidates equally tough questions. only one of them - donald - had a tantrum about it. the guy who can solve the world's problems by being "tough" couldn't handle a question at a debate asking him to explain his own statements. *eyeroll*

...either way, its a argument for the notion that Fox News is really faux news, as the number 1 rule of journalism is the journalist is to report the news, not make the news.

They would cover Trump regardless of ratings because he's the top polling candidate. It's all news judgment, nothing more.

Why did they promote the hell out of Trump, if it were not for the ratings?

All the networks promote all their "gets." You only find this remarkable because it's Fox. They are behaving in this case just as any other network would.

Why did Fox 'News' promote Trump before the debate? Wasn't it for the ratings they would get? Trump was the reason the ratings were so high, like it or not.

Greetings, Pete. :2wave:

Because he is currently the elephant in the room, and he will not be ignored! Sanders is doing the same thing for the Democrats - bringing some welcome fresh air into the campaigns by being outspoken. Why would any network not take advantage of that? It's new and novel, and the public enjoys it enough to tune in!

You make good points, but the article also explains Fox is quietly backing Trump/failing to defend Kelly publicly because Trump brings the ratings. Trump's fanbase has swayed Ailes. Kelly is left to take all the blame for the tough questioning of Trump now, but who really knows if she, and only she, prepared those questions without approval from Ailes or Fox News.

I'm confident I watch more Fox than you, and they promoted the Repub debate, not any individual.

The Fox News' coverage is, for the most part, (except for a Sean Hannity interview) negative towards Trump. If you'd watched The Fox News at all, (and weren't biased against Trump) you'd have realized this. That includes the debate. Two plus two does equal four.

Trump got (and continues to get) a fair shake. His problems are of his own making.

if indeed the whole thing was an elaborate setup to take down trump, then yes, they would forfeit their reputation as impartial arbiters and moderators

then again, i think it was more that the moderators simply prepared pointed questions and it was trump's tantrum reaction that became the news. at least in my view, what kelly said was a fair question and didn't come off as her trying to make herself the headline

in fact most are already on now to the "blood from her whatever" which didn't even happen in the debate, it was part of the continued trump tantrum a day or two after the fact

pretty messed up to let her take the heat for it

i agree that fox has clearly made the ratings more important than defending one of its anchors

Objective No. 1 for all interviewers is to make news.

Interesting.

But what I find most interesting is that I assume Kelly was sent out by Fox to hit Trump. But, even though Ailes praised Kelly, it is obvious they think she went too far.

OR, if they told her exactly what to say to Trump, then it makes Kelly look like just a mouthpiece (though I assume this is not what happened).

Either way, it does not make Kelly come out looking quite as good, imo.

Their next encounter (Trump-Kelly) could be very interesting.

Say what you want about Trump, he has certainly livened up the race considerably.

No, we still all lose if a reality show clown gets nominated to the most powerful office in the world.

If that doesn't make the USA a joke, i don't know what else could.

hey...at least we're not Italy

Beeg to differ, Roger Ailes problems are of his own making. He wanted and got the hightest rated debate in history but he got something worse... Donald Trump with his money and ego.

Trump is not a problem for Ailes or any other news executive. Trump is a ratings-driving lead story. For Ailes (and all his competitors) this is all upside. He gets bonus points for the Megyn Kelly side.

Off topic, but I wanted to tell you that I got the hardcover book War is Hell today from Amazon! Quickly skimming through it, I saw tactics, terrain, battle plans and a whole lot more - looks like very interesting reading for me coming up! !

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with that one. We were discussing Hell to Pay a few days ago.

Jack, the book I got was Hell to Pay! I'm looking at it right now, as a matter of fact, and I have no idea why my fingers typed another title. Weird! I have been plowing through a very long report the past few days that has me distracted, I guess. Plus, in the past two hours a neighbor came over and insisted that I come over to see her brand new patio furniture; granddaughter stopped by to drop off my garden cart she borrowed a month ago; son's friend stopped by to confirm what I want him to do tomorrow in the garden since he wants to get an early start before it gets too hot. *humming the song "Mama said there'd be days like this.....*

Should I drive my Ferrari or my Lamborghini today????

Kelly and Trump are both winners for Fox News. 24 million people witnessed it that night. That is more people than have watched MSNBC all year. :lamo
