I was watching tv the other day and I saw an ad for some charity that wants people to donate money to them so that they can buy swags for homeless people to sleep in. I hate charities because all they do is prevent real solutions to social problems but this particular charity - 'Swags for Homeless' - stands out to me being the most disgusting charity that I have ever seen. The Salvation Army promotes these disgusting 'swags for homeless'. Apparently the solution to homelessness is not to give homeless people housing - it is to give them a swag.

If you dont know - a swag is basically a fancy sleeping bag that has a matress in it and is waterproof. Swags are good for camping but they are not a home.

So apparently this 'Swags for the Homeless' has won a capitalist human rights award.

“It’s extremely grat*i*fy*ing to receive this pres*ti*gious Human Rights award, how*ever the real acknowl*edg*ment we need is from the gov*ern*ment in terms of fund*ing. It is against the Uni*ver*sal Dec*la*ra*tion of Human Rights Char*ter for the Aus*tralian Gov*ern*ment to ignore home*less turned away from shel*ters empty handed. They need to lis*ten to the almost 200 char*i*ties scream*ing about the suc*cess of the Back*pack Bed pro*gram.” said Mr Clark. -

As far as I know it is actually illegal to just roll out a swag and sleep in it on some city street or in a park. This disgusting 'Swags for Homeless' charity not only helps prevents real solutions to homelessness but it also encourages illegal activity. And to suggest that offering a homeless person a swag is promoting 'human rights' is absurd. All so-called 'advanced' nations that allow people to be homeless are human rights abusers. The 'Universal Declaration of Human Rights' is not worth the paper it is written on because all advanced economies do have the resources to prevent homelessnes but they refuse to because they are capitalists that do not want to help anyone.

Here in Australia it is very easy to become homeless and we have well over 100000 of them. The Australian Government forces unemployed people to look for work and if they do not do everything that the government tells them to do then the government will stop giving them welfare and make them homeless. How is this not a form of slavery and an abuse of so-called 'human rights'? Being cut off from unemployment benefits in Australia could be as simple as a dysfunctional unemployed person missing one phone call. An unemployed person misses one phone call and the government cuts them off from welfare with glee and makes them homeless. This is what 'advanced' nations do so they are guity of slavery and abuse of human rights. Just because disgusting 'charities' exist does not excuse advanced nations from their abuse of human rights. In reality charities only exist in advanced nations so that the capitalist State is free to promote slavery and abuse citizens human rights.

Capitalists do not want the poor to have access to affordable or public housing and they certainly do not want to house homeless people that cannot pay unless they are locking them up in a jail or a mental home.

What do you think about this? Is the solution to homelessness homes or swags?

Do you agree that 'advanced' capitalist economies are guilty of slavery and abuse of human rights?

Can you imagine if the 10000 Syrian refugees were given swags when they got here and told to find a place in an alley or park to sleep in until they got on top of things? Refugees should not have to live in tents and homeless western citizens should not be told to sleep in a swag and be happy about it. In my opinion anyone that would support the idea of giving homeless people swags to sleep in is an insane capitalist monster.

No, it's not a solution.

I don't think there really is any real solution to the problem of being homeless.

Some of them don't' want to be, but others just don't want to work for things, while others are mentally il and should be taken care of in an asylum.

We cant let criminals in jail sleep outside in swags. Why should law abiding citizens have to?

And every citizen should have a roof over their heads even if they do not want to work unless capitalism is just slavery which it is.

The solution is public housing for all. It doesnt take much to build every homeless person a small shelter. And of course if people have mental illness then they should be cared for - under a roof.

If we buy every homeless person a nice house, won't you hate them then for being bourgeois?

I dont hate anyone. Apart from black people and Mexicans. And the French. ( Im kidding ) ( about the black people and Mexicans ) ( Im kidding - I dont hate the French either. Not all of them anyway ).

I do not exactly consider home owners to be bourgeois. Not even petty. But Im not even suggesting that they be given homes really - I just dont want people sleeping in the streets or anything that encourages it. Governments own land and do not need to pay themselves rates. If a person becomes homeless and they are law abiding then why not send them to a permanent shelters that offer a roof, housing and a shower? You could make them work for room and board probably I guess if they are capable. If they are not capable then put them in mental homes. Have slavery - fine. But people should not be sleeping in the streets.

I agree with you man, and you make some good points. I even laughed at the French joke, lol.
But the reality is, a lot of homeless people prefer the streets. I live around a lot of homeless, and talk to many of them. Drugs and alcohol are the number one thing that keeps em homeless, and people only quit those when they're good and ready. The majority of homeless wouldn't step foot in a government ran shelter for them, and the civil rights lawyers would sue up the ying yang and scream Fascism if anyone in power proposed it.
The government doesn't care about homeless people, not their concern. Oh they'll bring them up come election time, and then forget just as soon as their butt gets elected.

Yes I know. Most homeless cant really be helped and dont want real help. But its not good for them or the general public for them to be hanging around the streets.

I would put them into something like a fema camp maybe. Give them the option of that or jail. Offer them unskilled work and/or training and try to help them contribute to society in some way. I think that there are some good things about 'fascism' really. If a person cannot support themselves/look after themselves or refuse to then the State needs to protect them from themselves and others.

And we had that for years, the homeless weren't allowed to just hang out wherever. There were way less homeless and mentally ill on the streets back then. I didn't see it because it was before my time, but older people have said it.
I'd support the camp idea. I think after people started learning job skills and getting cleaned up from drugs they'd realize it's better for them. Now if they ACLU lawyers could shut up to let it happen, we'd all be better off.

interesting solution to immigration housing, however i cannot agree that capitalist economies are guilty as charged, what they are guilty of is indifference.

If we have learned anything from the indigenous intervention we should have learned that you cannot change human nature and you cannot change entrenched attitudes and homelessness suffers from lack of intervention. Homelessness has rootes in adelosence problems and mental health, it is the truth that some people just cannot cope but vagrancy should be an offence and be dealt with with intervention. Facilitating vagrancy isn't an answer and I question, as with any charity making public appeals, just how much of the contributions find their way to the sharp end. Ask yourself how many swags do they have earmarked for indigenous sleeping rough? how many for adelosences? How many for the mentally deficient?. before there was a massive reduction in mental health funding a number of these people were institutionalised
