China to invest $78 bn to build 110 nuclear power plants by 2030, will overtake US - Firstpost

China plans to build 110 nuclear power plants by 2030 with an investment of over $78 billion overtaking the US which has 100 such plants amid criticism that Beijing is yet to implement enough measures to develop safety controls in existing projects. China will build six to eight nuclear power plants annually for the next five years and operate 110 plants by 2030 to meet the urgent need for clean energy, Beijing-based China Times quoted plan analysts as saying. China will invest 500 billion yuan ($78.8 billion) on domestically developed nuclear power plants, the report said. According to the China Times, the country plans to increase its electricity generation capacity to 58 gigawatts by 2020, three times the 2014 level.

Overtake the US in what? I thought France was #1 for nuclear power.

I am sure this will work out well since China has always had a good record of building quality infrastructure.

P.S. Sarcasm.

Number of nuclear power plants.

They are investing heavily into multiple forms of clean energy. Their air pollution is getting really bad.

They are investing heavily into all forms of clean energy. Their air pollution is getting really bad.

Well that has nothing to do with the fact the Chinese are historically rather bad at building infrastructure, also not to mention if they can get through the corruption to actually build them. Then there is the fact the Chinese environment is too far gone anyways.

I think he means in "number of operated reactors."

I'm looking at the ranking on Wikipedia at the moment and the US is the top dog by a mile. But, nuclear power isn't something the US is even focusing on, though Obama is pushing to change that. I think the headline is supposed to scare us or something to that effect.

Maybe, but something tells me China is going to surprise you and make it work.

Then there is the fact the Chinese environment is too far gone anyways.

Can you verify that fact?

the usa has the most nuclear plants in the world, your thinking of which country has the most by percentage

How is it too far gone?

Well it would be literally the first thing the CCP has ever actually accomplished without something horrible happening in the process, even if they do accomplish it I can guarantee lots of people will die and/or be forced out of their homes. It is too far gone in the sense that the Chinese environment is so polluted and toxic nothing can be done to reverse it. They have polluted almost all of their water and what they have is rapidly depleting. Then there is the massive ground and air pollution which will stick around for decades even if you shutdown every factory and cleaned up all the pollutants for decades or even centuries. Now nuclear waste is going to be thrown into that mix.

I don't think you can actually guarantee that. For some reason I was thinking construction of that magnitude would create jobs and improve their economy.

Nuclear waste is a problem, but I believe humanity will find a way around that problem. Combating climate change is more important right now.

As long as China (1) builds their reactors to be truly safe (unlike Japan) and (2) has a site where they can dump the hot spent fuel, then if they want to plow ahead into nuclear energy I am happy for them.

The USA was never able to settle where to put the hot waste. None of the states wants it.

There have been a few mistakes and meltdowns in the USA as well, but nothing as bad as Fukushima in Japan.
