You become smarter by working hard and gaining more experience... so in the long term, smart people are those who work the hardest.

1) I'm not so sure about the relationship between family values and education. Sure family is very important in East Asian society (Confucius or Gongja in Korean) yet I have never heard of it being attributed as a source of great educational achievement.
2) Culture though explains a lot. --snip-- it fostered a culture that places enormous value on education, and we are now reaping the rewards.

No one denied Culture helps. Indeed, NO one answered me several times as to how they got this culture. As I pointed out, they didn't win it in a Lottery, they developed themselves because they were smart.
So it doesn't contradict or even answer me in any way, still!

He also praised the Talmud and the Jewish tradition it represents for its family values, respect for adults, and respect for education in general.

Korean Times, Ten Years Ago
Nearly ten years ago, the Korea Times reported: “Interestingly, there are at least two different books currently sitting on Korean best-seller shelves that purport to explain the Jewish Talmud. The popularity of these books initially came as a surprise. But Koreans aren’t converting to Judaism. They read those books because Jews have gained a reputation for hard work and success, two things Koreans relate to well.”

Reports of Korean schoolchildren reading the Talmud – or at least stories thereof – have also been known for several years. One American teacher in South Korea related that in 2005, his elementary school students told him that as children, they had ALL read the Talmud, which they called the "Light of Knowledge." When asked if they had also read the Koran, they Burst into Laughter, saying, "Of course Not, that’s the Muslim book.”

I'm just educated-guessing here, but I'll betcha the great majority of those Jewish Nobel winners (and Half-Jewish Int'l Chess Champions) Never read the Talmud: it's mostly an Orthodox thingie.
So the study of it is Not as likely as Mostly Heritable Intelligence as an explanation. Still.
