I just saw a report that the junta took two cargo loads of UN supplies to be distributed by the World Food Programme. The UN has halted shipments into Rangoon, Burma's largest city and former capital, until further notice as a result.

The French have been toying with the idea of bypassing the junt and carrying out Air-Drops - however I believe Indian and Chinese aid is being allowed in so maybe the solution is to donate the Aid to India and China for the Burmese to accept without losing whatever self esteem they think they will lose.

The Americans have also toyed with the same idea. It would be a violation of international law - BUT it would be the morally correct thing to do. As for Chinese aid, according to what I have heard in Chinese language press, that was given directly to the government - something that UN aid agencies and many Western governments will not accept.

I,ld agree that morality trumps legality but what international law would it violate?

Re: Myanmar deaths may exceed 100,000: U.S.

i was talking to our cafeteria snack bar operator just now, who is a burmese and what many like him believed is that these cyclone nargis is the GOD's to the collective prayers of the monks who were recently, ruthlessly killed and to a large extend abused. It hit the hardest too in Yangon where all this masaccres took place and never anywhere else. Thus a mega destruction of an ultimate kind will surely release/remove whatever negative forces/energy that has been surpressing this once thriving nation....

I kinda agreed with him ....

its like good over evil ...but then when this forces of nature takes over the wheel and run its course, it has NO mercy to the lives that is caught in between....did you know that nations too have karma- same like what tsunami did to banda acheh / indonesia or israel / palestine conflict - there are forces or karmic cycles at play here too where many failed to realise.

Re: Myanmar deaths may exceed 100,000: U.S.

Seems there are elections to be held which have been pre-organised for quite a while. BBC reports stated there was some reasoning that the junta's priorities lay there with making sure the elections went by smoothly. Backdrop images of bloated dead bodies laying on floodbanks really sent a chill down my spine.

I believe it is a referendum that is designed to legitimize and further strengthen their control over the country. Pathetic really. Why don't they recognize the only TRUE election that has taken place in that country in the past 46 years - the one in which Daw Aung's party won.

Very sad for these innocent people.I think I recognize some of the villagers. They wear the headdress of the Karen. They're not receiving any government aid whatsoever.Meanwhile,CNN's reporter had to flee the country but Junta TV was up and running spewing idiotic people singing and looking happy, despicable!
