I'm a little confused.

How is this example of insipid nationalism mixed with vague fear-mongering any less tasteful than the insipid nationalism mixed with vague fear generated by Americans every day?

They can't win yet, but considering the government we have here now, sadly they may not have to invade. Ma may give Taiwan to China on a silver platter - who knows?

Re: Chinese Military and Its Duties

what is China going to do when transportation costs are so high that it's cheaper to manufacture in the West?

I think all the globalization hysteria has missed that the entire crux of the development is cheap transportation- something which seems unlikely in the future.

I foresee Western re-industrialization in the near future.

Dude, where can I see this movie? It looks hella good!

Seriously though...

A couple things that I noticed as I watched the video. It has a lot of "American" images. For instance, the very last photo is a picture of a soldier hoisting a flag, which is in stark resemblance of the soldiers who hoisted the US flag in Iwo Gima.

And then there was the areo acrobatics done by thier jets, and they showed a jet being refueled in mid-air. Which reminded me of our own "Join the Air Force" commercials from a couple years back.

Then there were the shots of the tall skyscrapers that looked like New York or Los Angeles. And of course they show the little children walking across the street and right after they show words like "Protect" or "Brave" or "Threat" etc. It's our standard American fear tactic to recruit more soldiers.

I'm not saying that only Americans use these types of images, but I'm just saying I see a lot of our own culture in that peice of propaganda. Further indication that China is becoming more like the US, a "developed nation"? Perhaps, I suppose. There sure are a lot of similarities.

I think, with where our respective nations (the United States and China) are right now, there are more differences than similarities.

I think the similarities between the language and the images used in this video and the language and images used in typical US propaganda is more a matter of the Chinese taking a page from a playbook that works.

So whats going to change that will enable them to win in the future? The only thing stopping China from taking over Taiwan is the international backlash that would create and thats not going to change any time soon.

Taiwan's military isn't exactly a pushover. They have plenty of firepower, plus the advantage that China doesn't want to destroy them.
