Speaks for itself.

I was rather shocked to discover a cover version of a very old and well-known song, one of my absolute favourites, that surpasses the original. I think that's very rare, but of course, totally subjective. Still, nice excuse for a vid-sharing thread.

Post here your covers (the more obscure the performer the better IMHO) and the originals of some of the greatest songs and let's see if the DP jury concurs with your opinion.

Oh, I almost forgot. Here's that discovery, followed by the original.

Twisted Sisters did a better version of "Come on Feel Da Noiz" than the original. That's for damn sure.

Sinead O' Conner's version of "Nothing Compares 2 U" was better than the original.

There's a couple of others but it's to early in the morning to dream them up...

I'm not too fond of most of their songs, but Disturbed did a cover of the Sound of Silence that I really like. I consider it one of their best works.

Great thread idea, this is something I've thought about a million times.

Here's a few;

Ramones- Do You Wanna Dance?
Jimi Hendrix- Come On Let the Good Times Roll
Led Zeppelin- their entire catalog was a Willie Dixon song lol
Metallica- Breadfan, Am I Evil, Crash Course in Brain Surgery
Van Halen- You Really Got Me
Rolling Stones- Shake Your Hips

TAAC is right, it's Quiet Riot, and it's a softened, much inferior version to the raw, proper rocky original. Judge for yourselves.

True that!

Here you go

the original was good, but the clash owned this song

Natty Holder-hard to match

However, I think this was the best cover ever since Jimi was not the original artist. This song made Hendrix an international superstar and showed why so many people rate him as the greatest rock guitarist ever. (Noel Redding's bass line is something special too)

I think The Kinks original is better.

This song was covered dozens of times after Tim Rose ripped it off

Im a hard core Deadhead but the two best covers of this are those

Original-Bonnie Dobson

The Best cover IMHO

Honorable Mention

another good song with a better cover mainly because EV's a better singer than JR

Metallica- Breadfan, Am I Evil, Crash Course in Brain Surgery
Van Halen- You Really Got Me
Rolling Stones- Shake Your Hips <-- These guys, too - they just never gave credit!
Along with a plethora of assorted and sundry sixties rock & rollers.

Special mention: Tom Dowd & Ahmet Ertegün

Girl named Birdy has a cover of "Skinny Love" that's better than the original.

Also, can't think of the band name, but vocals is a dude, and they do a cover of "Ubrella" that I think is better than the original.

I also really like the smashing pumpkins cover of "Landslide".

I think that song is the most covered song in history.

Hey - thanks for this, Turtle!

Didn't know the Allman's had a cover of this, and I'm really into them.

I've gotta say this, though: For all that are out there, I don't think I've ever heard a *really* bad cover of Morning Dew.

Well O.K., maybe Lulu's!

Yeah that was enough to give someone diabetes

The GD's version-especially the famous 5/8/77 at Barton Hall (Cornell) is the most popular. Other decent ones include Nazareth and Jeff Beck's. Robert Plant did a nice one with Bonnie.

Gregg's voice however is perfect for that song and Duane's guitar is a thing of Beauty but Aaron and Bryce Dessner (local boys, their dad belongs to the same club I do and once was a really good tennis player) are two of the best current guitarists in the world and they do a great job on that classic.

JohnnyBGood has been covered by lots of people

House of the Rising Sun-a bunch too

and of course Morning Dew.

The original is one of the greatest acoustic pieces ever recorded IMHO

the cover's electric version is equally awesome

Alright, let's throw another Canuck tune into the mix - same era, same genre.

I wish I could say the cover is better, but they are both so good and unique I can't, but have to toss both out there.

The original is iconically priceless. But the Mathew's southern comfort version flows beautifully and has a special place in my heart.
