M*A*S*H: Of the two, who was better? Col. Blake or Col. Potter?

I liked both, but of the two I liked Potter better.

I never warmed up the the Dragnet guy. Harry Morgan just never had me in stitches. But, McLean Stevenson sure as hell did.

That is tough. I liked them both for different reasons. But in the end I preferred LTC Blake because he was funnier. COL Potter played more of the straight man, which worked well. But if I have to chose I would go with the lieutenant colonel.

I prefer Potter. He acted like real Army, but still understood and made allowances for the "civilians in uniform" serving as the field doctors. That added validity to the show while maintaining the humor.

Blake was just a complete joke, too much DGS (Don't give a sh+t) and therefore less believable as the leader of a MASH unit during the serious periods.

This. Precisely this. Potter was Army, but knew the realities, too. Plus, he'd been around the war block a few times. Hence, when push came to shove, and Potter had to put his foot down, you could tell that everybody respected him and did as told.

Blake, while a fun guy and everybody liked him (except maybe Burns, lol), no one respected him.

Kinda deep for a sitcom, but hey...

Col. Blake is my guy. Funny man. Extremely talented. Made one of the worst career moves in the history of television. Don't know if I could have ever recovered in my head if I'd done the same.

Remember "Hello Larry"?

He knows he made a dumb career move. I heard him say in an interview years later that he thought people were in love with McLean Stevenson when in fact they were in love with Henry Blake.

Joins a long list of guys who thought they were bigger than the show that made them famous. For years, I thought he was replaced because he died in R/L. Of course, he didn't actually die until the late 90's, but his career sure died when that helicopter crashed.

I read somewhere else that the show's producers killed Blake off in the crash purposely. They were very put off that he was leaving the show and they wanted to make sure he could never come back for any reason.

Yeah....reading it now, I'd have to agree. Kill him off and no way can he come back.

And they didn't tell anybody in the cast they were going to do it, so the reactions on screen are real.

Good directing, I say.

Yeah, I loved Blake but Potter lifted the series, especially with the way corporal Klinger's part evolved under Potter was great.

I prefer the movie to the TV show.

Bonus points if anyone can recount the obscure fact about Harry Morgan and his first appearance in the show.

Ding ding ding...Loved that episode because he was a total lunatic in it. No where near the straight man he played as Col. Potter.
