It's the 15th anniversary of 9-11. Instead of coming together and growing stronger as a nation we have been driven apart. There is zero chance Trump or Hillary will reverse that course.

So to avoid the pit of despair these thoughts are leading me to I have decided to focus on the positive today. I am going to watch "Sully". One of my favorite actors portraying one of my favorite real life heroes.

I heard the reviews for that movie are very positive (83% on Rotten Tomatoes, 8/10 on IMDb), so I think you're gonna have a good time.

Enjoy!

I read where it is directed by Clint Eastwood, so that's plus

I think that's a great idea.

This morning I awoke to a special radio broadcast of the 911 attacks; the attacks themselves, the thousands of stranded American travelers stranded in our airport, all of it, including memorials throughout the country...and so on.

It might be happening there, but I don't see it out there, top of the news like it is here. And we were mere witnesses and aid after the fact. There its Trump and the stupid name calling in the greatest hoax election in history. And your words "Instead of coming together and growing stronger as a nation we have been driven apart...." and ask, have the terrorists won?

As you note, both so-called leaders are ramping up their negativity in a deliberate attempt to drive you further and further apart, and I ask myself why would anyone keep listening to them?

You can't hate your neighbor and love your country, your neighbor is your country.

It is popular in my town, saw lots of people buying tickets and it is in one of the larger theaters. Figured it was a move for conservatives given the age of the people I saw and that we have a lot of military and retired military here. This is the only movie that is playing 5 times today, 2 are playing 4 times, all the rest less (dead time of the year).

Looks like a winner.

Box Office MOJO says Sully ran away with the weekend at $35.5 MIL. Next was When the Bough Breaks at 15.

I just got out of the movie. Really hit the spot. It did show an interesting perspective I hadn't thought about. Immediately after the incident Sully is being called a hero by everyone who recognizes him and all over TV. Meanwhile, behind the scenes the NTSB is second guessing every choice he made and makes him wonder if he unnecessarily gambled with all their lives. Really good movie.

Ha! That is funny because the first thing I noticed when I walked into that packed theater was about 80% of the audience was gray or balding. :) Definitely an older crowd. I'm not sure why other than the hero of the movie is an older gentleman. And the movie is apolitical.

The quiet hero regular Joe is one of the most powerful conservative motifs. Sure they cant clam if for themselves but boy does it sing to conservatives.

While I am sure the movie is very well made and Hanks does his usual more than competent job of playing a real person, the fact the almost the entire movie is made up nonsense that never happened will prevent me seeing it.

When ever I get on an airplane, I make sure Tom Hanks isn't on it. His flights don't end well!

I'm going Thursday. I always thought Sully was a hero. From the previews, it looks as though they put him thru the wringer...

Good to hear that. Am planning to go in the next couple weeks.

Enjoy Tom Hanks and was hoping they would give a good movie. For one thing there is no spoiler alert.

Most conservatives could really give a **** about the age of any hero.

I agree.

Who said otherwise?

I mean I am not conservative, though I did spend a lot of years attached to the military ( spouse of a soldier and fed soldiers for 10 years in DEFAC's working with almost all ex soldiers in the kitchen, me doing a few years as a shift leader of a DEFAC averaging around 800 soldiers a meal). And I come from a mostly conservative family and was brought up in a then very conservative mid-west town/city.I know a wee bit about them.

Right? On top of almost dying you don't even reach your intended destination. :)

That's just it, they didn't. Most of the movie - the plot line about the evil government FAA people out to get Sully for being incompetent was completely made up for the movie. Total fiction. None of it ever happened. They did it so they wouldn't end up with a 20 minute long movie.

OMG. How could Sully not be speaking up about this??

Actually, the NTSB was trying to make it look like Scully had made the wrong decision. A former associate pastor at my church is an airplane inspector for the Forest Service and a "loaner" to the NTSB (he does crash scene inspections for them) and from what he told me, that's the approach that the NTSB usually takes. They assume pilot error until proven differently. It's not done maliciously, it's just the process that's taken. They start with pilot error and then work towards proving that assumption wrong. Everyone wants the pilot cleared and they work towards that goal, but if it's truly the pilot's fault, then that's the conclusion they arrive at, but only after eliminating all other possibilities. I think that the movie made it look like the NTSB was out to get Scully, when the truth most likely was that the process was designed to make it look that way.

Sully did an interview on one of the morning chat shows last week but apparently they mostly just talked about answering a knock at his front door and literally seeing Clint Eastwood standing there. He must have cooperated at some level.

The co-pilot, Jeffrey Skiles wanted nothing to do with the movie (why I do not know) and is I believe the only person who was aboard the plane that does not appear in a group photo at the end of the film.

I supposed Eastwood had to do something other than have the plane taxi for an hour in order to have a feature length film and because its Hollywood they need tension and drama so he made up this story about the government being after Sully which is almost entirely false. I expect plenty of embellishment and truth stretching in my based on real events movies, but I have to draw the line at outright fabrication of the bulk of the story. Millions of people will see this and get the totally wrong idea of what really happened.

I'm one of those who absolutely got the wrong idea. I just read some online info that echoed your post. The FAA stated they ALWAYS question the flight crew, but that they never at any time thought Sully was anything less than heroic. As for him possibly being able to land at the airport, the FAA rep is quoted as saying that, had Sully INSTANTLY decided to head to the airport, he "probably" would have made it. However, he went on, (paraphrased) Sully would have had to make that decision in a few seconds and that, in his opinion, wasn't possible. He also said that the film makers never asked for commentary from them and much of the movie is a poor slant on the truth.

Well I was planning to watch it, but after reading your entry I decided not to.

Im a huge Clint Eastwood fan but WTH has he been doing with his movies lately? He embellished a lot of stuff in American Sniper as well.
