Keith Emerson, Emerson, Lake and Palmer Keyboardist, Dead at 71 | Rolling Stone

Keith Emerson, founding member and keyboardist of Emerson, Lake and Palmer and a prog rock legend, died Friday. He was 71. While the cause of death was not announced, both his bandmate Carl Palmer and the trio's official Facebook confirmed Emerson's death. "We regret to announce that Keith Emerson died last night at his home in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, aged 71. We ask that the family’s privacy and grief be respected," the band wrote.

Sad news. I remember listening to ELP albums at a friends' house as a kid in the 70's. Awestruck by the album art.

Good times.

Always one of my favorite groups with the big progressive sound and innovative musical style. Emerson had a great career , made a great contribution to his art and will be fondly remembered. He and Rick Wakeman were the preeminent keyboard visionaries from that era.

Oh what a lucky man he was.

What a Lucky Man he was.

Too bad, lots of talent lost there. There are some reports it was a suicide. I know he had suffered colon cancer a few years ago

Can someone explain why ELP is not in the RR hall of fame when stuff like NWA and the Beastie Boys are?

Rest in peace.

Doobie Brothers aren't in either.

Doobie Brothers aren't in either.

the biggest joke is Ian Anderson/Jethro Tull not being included

that is in terms of influence, years active, albums sold and concert attendance. Way ahead of Beastie Boys, NWA and a bunch of other acts.

Moody blues, YES, and ELP would be the next glaring omissions

Lucky Man is my favorite rock song of all time. Lake had such a great voice back then.

Father Christmas is another showcase of his vocals

Keith did his synth solo and there were no more tracks to record so they let his first solo go on to the record. He wanted a 2nd pass... but he didn't get it.

The synth solo on that tune is the definitive birth of synthesizers in popular music that so many thousands of musicians are aspiring to... music geniuses all around! That's ELP!

Greg Lake's Acoustic version was pretty damn good too

RIP. When I was around 9 my uncle played Lucky Man on the record player and I couldn't get enough of it- it was like musical poetry.

TMZ and the BBC are reporting that Keith died of a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

~ not in the RR hall of fame ~

Always found the concept of a "hall of fame" a ridiculous thing; it will always be a pointless, subjective thing who goes in and who shouldn't be there. True fans of any musician / sports star shouldn't really care that their favoured celebrity isn't in such a list as it doesn't diminish their achievements in any way.

august 1974
charlotte motor speedway
quad speakers in the 4 'corners' of the venue
dropped an orange barrel just before ELP performed
laid on the ground looking at the sky immersed in the music (because i was unable to stand up)
they began with fanfare
just me and ELP and the music
... and a quarter million other wasted freaks
R.I.P. Keith and THANKS for the music and the memories

The RnR HoF is probably the most egregiously "popularity club" HoF I know of.
