Do you like today's rock music?

You're ignoring the musical "genius" of Kanye West? He's the greatest of all time, just ask him.

there is a satellite radio station that plays basically nothing but Grateful Dead 20 years after that band lost its leader. they routinely play stuff from those guys that is fifty years old

same with Mick and the boys and of course the Beatles.

you think the crap like Kanye West is even going to be remembered fifty years from now

and I bet the stones will still be popular when my seventeen year old son is my age

**** the beatles. Pink Floyd is markedly better.

IT's a shame that the Beatles has the record of albums sold while PF is at #2 in history. But then again, that just goes to show the lack of taste humanity in general has.

lol...I'm guessing Kanye's crap wouldn't even be remembered today if he wasn't married into the current version of the Munsters.

she is-and she's cute-but she doesn't have the same vocal range of say Linda Ronstadt, Maddy Prior or the Late Great Sandy Denny (the only guest vocalist on a LZ record).

Pshaw - Linda wasn't that good.

You want to hear female rocker vocal ranges, listen to Ann Wilson, Grace Potter, or Allison Krauss.

I don't rate PF ahead of the Stones, the who, Led Zeppelin, the Allman Brothers, in terms of talent or creativity.

are they one of the best-yes, but I don't really don't think they are superior to Cream, the GD, and while they didn't last as long-Mountain

Annie Haslam (Renaissance) Maddy Prior (Steeleye Span), Sandy Denny (Fairport convention) all were 5-6 Octave ranged singers. Denny died young, Maddy's been good for 50 years as has Annie. Melody Maker (England) said Prior had the best voice in British pop/rock.

He's a clown. its like NWA or Beastie Boys being in the rock hall of fame while Jethro Tull and Greg Lake, and Yes not being in it. Tull's still going to be played long after I'm gone. I doubt you can find NWA on any station of any note

Tells me a lot about the Rock HOF.

yeah, they hate progressive rock for some reason. its a no brainer. Tull sold millions of albums, sold out hundreds of concerts for 25+ years and was a major influence on rock-Ian Anderson did for the flute what John Lord and John Paul Jones did for the organ in hard rock. so on any gradient-popularity, longevity, influence and creativity they are top 20 acts of all time. Same with Yes and to a slightly lesser extent, the Moody Blues. Hell they just let Deep Purple in-Ian Gillan's work on Jesus Christ Superstar alone is far more important than anything NWA or the Beastie boys spewed out

Yeah, it may be the generation. I grew up in the 80s, and everything I liked is booming today, I'm really very pleased and among friends we've remarked as such.
Video games, alternative/electronic music, and anime. So I understand the frustration, I'd be pissed if that stuff had gone away.

I felt like rock was phasing out around then, branching out between country-rock, pop-rock, and alternative-rock. I'm no music aficionado though.

This whole thread is just a bunch of older posters yelling at music because it's just new. So yeah. . .

You just don't understand how cool we all were back before light bulbs!!

I'm not a music snob or expert. It is something I listen to when I am in the car. I enjoy most styles of music. There are plenty of songs I enjoy listening to today because they make me happy, even though I recognize the singer isn't all that great and the music itself if very unoriginal. But it is produced in such a way that makes me sing along as I am driving. Much of today's pop music falls under that category. Then, of course, there is the music that just hits me in the soul. And I don't believe in souls. Music that you find yourself holding your breath during the intense parts. Jimi, Pink Floyd, and even Lynyrd Skynyrd do that for me.

Most of my favorite music of all times falls under the heading of rock music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. In the past 10 years most of my preferred music falls under alternative, pop, and some country. Not much rock, though I do enjoy some Linkin Park and Daughtry.

I also really enjoy hip hop but lately I have not been impressed by what is making the top of the hip hop charts.

And all of that is only when I can actually tell what kind of music it is I am listening to.

Ive got high hopes for Kings of Leon and Imagine Dragons...but I don't love modern rock.

Kind of an alternate to rock...Ive been enjoying Josh Garrels music.

Nobody is saying the 70's isn't still great, it is, and I love too.

But, there are many many young artists/bands out there today that are extremely talented as well.

what's funny is so many kids my 17 year old son's age are turning away from the current crop of wannabe's and listening to the stuff I did at his age like LZ, Mountain, Cream and other groups that actually had real talent

My son as well, though he's in his mid twenties now. He makes nice side money as a DJ spinning mostly EDM but listens to a lot of classic rock music - LZ, Hendrix etc. He also gets a lot of call from kids for that music when he's working. When the kids aren't dancing they apparently want to hear rock. My experience as well in bar bands. My current classic rock group's members range in age from late 30s to late 50s and the typical audience runs from mid 20s to 50s and as long as they can dance to it they're happy. Heck it's a rare night that some 20 year old doesn't ask for "Freebird" or "Sweet Home Alabama" :)

Agree. I'm a big fan of "Live from Darryl's House" Darryl Hall's web based show where he and his band jam with guest artists. He often has new young performers on doing their material and they are all uniformly good - really good.

Side note: Darryl's backing band is outstanding. The level of musicianship is absolutely amazing. And he's not shy about reworking his tunes to give them a new life. I appreciate that.

They started out early. Late 60s if I recall.

Yeah, thats old.

I know the wall at least came out way before the 90s

Mid Sixties. I saw them for the first time in 1966.

What makes today's rock so good? Are they selling out stadiums like they did in the 80's?

Yes
Are there technically great musicians like there were in the 80's?

Yes

Are kids wearing t-shirts of current rock bands or going nuts over them like they did with Elvis and the Beatles?

Yes

Take the 70's alone, do you think there are any musicians today who are comparable to Elton John, David Bowie, the Eagles, the Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zepplin, AC/DC, or Pink Floyd? If so, who?

I do not think they want to be comparable. They want to be their own thing.

Anne Wilson is hands down the best female rock singer active today and quite possibly ever. Not only does she have a wide range but she knows how to use it to maximal effect, unlike some 4 octave divas who routinely kill dogs with their upper registers. And she phrases wonderfully.

Someone once commented that the greatest thing Linda did was make the words to "Tumbling Dice" understandable. I won't go that far. She's among the best in my opinion but Anne is better.

Whew... Well, you're gonna have to narrow that down for me. There's so many kinds of rock these days. Hell, there's probably 30 genres just in the metal category alone.

You've got everything from romantic classical stuff in the goth genre, post-punk revivalists, teeth-smashing grindcore, a lot of really interesting avante garde stuff, wall of sound heavy metal...

Oh, and if you are not familiar, check this out. The guitar work starting at about 2:45 is godly(and played by this tiny little Japanese woman):
