CBS Television Studios announced today it will launch a totally new Star Trek television series in January 2017. The new series will blast off with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network. The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the Network’s digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service.
The next chapter of the Star Trek franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International.
The new program will be the first original series developed specifically for U.S. audiences for CBS All Access, a cross-platform streaming service that brings viewers thousands of episodes from CBS’s current and past seasons on demand, plus the ability to stream their local CBS Television station live for $5.99 per month. CBS All Access already offers every episode of all previous Star Trek television series.
Star Trek New Star Trek Series Premieres January 2017

NERD OUT!!!!!!!!! Oh man what era? Will it be "New Trek Reboot-Verse" or will it be post Picard era? UHG!!!!!

Actually, what I've been looking for is the story of the beginning of Starfleet Command and the general war, where Kirk and crew would be very minor characters.

Cant wait!... omfgs omfgs.. this is bigger news than the Star Wars movies .. well to me at least :)

Star Trek is going to be one of those series that's always on the air. It's not as marketble as Star Wars but it definitely has it's appeal. My favorite series hands down is ST:TNG.

I'd be good with that.

If they do this right it will be fantastic.

Yeah, that's where the newer movies have gone. But the whole beginning thing has never been told.

I hope I'm not disappointed by the new idea.

I never read any of the Star Trek books. Did any of them go back that far?

That is VERY good news as far as I am concerned. While some of the series were certainly better than others, I enjoyed every single one of them. I love the whole Star Trek mythos.

I agree. But let's tread lightly. Those are fighting words to some.

Agreed. Basing it at the beginning would be best. I am fairly certain that whatever plotline they go with it will be all new characters, as it should be.

The show has been going on since what..the late 60's and so far nobody has explained how it started? I find that hard to believe. Heck, if I remember correctly one of the movies centered on the first warp drive so there must have been an origin story somewhere.

Gosh, I have all my stuff packed away, but I do have the entire first series of books and have read all of them. There is one early story, written by William Shatner; only Shatner can really write about Kirk... It is the story of how Kirk came to be. There are scenes about young Kirk, stealing the Vette etc that appear in one of the last movies that are taken directly from that book. That stuff is a such a great read, because it's experiencing new episodes. I used to go through each one in about 4 or 5 days.

Yeah, I just hope they don't so some PC new ship and crew trying to prove something. The original Trek did that very well with dynamite content inspiration, but they weren't overt about it. Most of the new TV stuff IS overt and I don't enjoy it anywhere near as much. Early Next Generation was that way but improved immensely as it went along, and the throwbacks were really great.

The origin story was a film, "First Contact" a prequell kind of thing. Rodenberry said in the 60's that he never wanted it to have a beginning and an end, he wanted it to be a journey.

Best 60's episode: The Wrath of Khan, funniest: The Trouble with Tribbles

Moderator's Warning:
I enjoy Star Trek, but not quite appropriate for "Breaking news" ;) Moved to proper location

Alright, I am not so much of a nerd I knew all this but a quick look at a wiki gives me this timeline.

2063 - First warp drive is developed and Earth makes first ocntact with the Vulcans
2150 - The United Earth Government is formed
2151 - Earth developes the first Warp 5 ****, captain by Archer. This is where the tv show Enterprise takes over.
2161 - The United Federation of Planets is formed. This is a year after the Earth-Romulan War.
2265 - Kirk is made Captain of the Enterprise

So there is a good 100 years to work with between the founding of the Federation and when Kirk's Enterprise comes on scene. There is a lot of good potential in there.

Archer was my favorite captain.

Spock was my favorite science officer and Vulcan.

Tpol was the sexiest.

I always loved the outfits from the 1960s shows. Those were really exciting. The jumpsuit looking things from the 1990s were pretty blah. I didn't like those at all.

Err 7 of 9... hands down!

No argument from me, though the green girl from the original series was pretty cute too - though she was a couple cards short of a full deck.

Great news. I'd love to see a series detailing the creation of the Federation. Something along the lines of Caprica the Battlestar Galactica prequel.

TNG is the best of the series in my opinion. It tackled some tough questions and had the best writing though I didn't see all of Voyager or Enterprise.

the fascination with the series continues

from us baby boomers, to the new generations

all the series showed us what humanity can evolve to....

the science was fictional, but plausible in most cases

i have always been more of a trekkie than a star wars fan....

to me, tng was great (picard, riker, worf, data, etc)

where they go with this one....who knows

but why on PAY TV and not on regular tv?

did you all catch that part?

There is also the ~70 years after Kirk until Picard.

But don't forget...

In the first of the two new movies, the timeline was altered. Kirk can have all new adventures. there is a third ST movie scheduled, maybe it will launch a series with the same characters?

Unlikely, but what if?

I'm hoping I'm still around for 2063 (I'll be 97, lol) cause I'm going to Bozeman, MT for a party.
