My apartment is slowly being filled with various religious artwork, mostly relating Hindu and Buddhism.

Here is my latest acquisition. It's a rather cheesy by lovable depiction Daikokuten, one of the Seven Gods of Fortune. He stands on two bales of rice, carries a sack on his back, and has a mushroomed cap -- thus representing the male phallus.

I look forward to pointing it out to my guests.

So he's a dickhead?

Is that a ray gun he's holding?

So he's a dickhead?

He's the God of Five Cereals, God of Rice, God of Fertility, and is the Buddhist incarnation of the Hindu god Shiva -- one-third of the Trimurti who collectively comprise God.

But yes, he's a dickhead. At least in this form, he represents male genitalia.

Is that a ray gun he's holding?

It's the Miracle Mallet, a hammer that grants wishes.

I tried to Google the image to no avail. He's unique for sure.

Thanks.

My youngest dabbles in Buddhism but, as a Christian I worship only one God.

Cool. I am not religious at all, but I find the art very enjoyable. I like examining how (for example) a multi-armed universe-destroying cosmic being can end up as Super Mario.

Looks like you're building up a pretty nice collection of idols..er um, statues.

Here are the Shichifukujin (Seven Lucky Gods) in all their glory.

Top Three:

Bishamon (God of War)
Benzaiten (God of Arts, Water, Knowledge, Beauty)
Jurojin (God of Wisdom, Longevity)

Bottom Four:

Fukurokuju (God of Wisdom, Longevity, Contentment; the assimilation/fusion of the Three Chinese Star Gods)
Daikokuten (God of Five Cereals, Rice, Fortune, Fertility, etc.)
Ebisu (God of Fisherman and Merchants; born deformed)
Hotei/Budai (God of Happiness; often mistaken for Buddha)

Those are very neat looking pictures. That one of the universe destroying monster was kinda creepy, but must be beautiful to see close up.

That would be Mahakala (who is technically Daikoku), who in turn is Shiva. The Hindu deva (gods) are mostly depicted as beautiful beings, even the males. Here is Shiva:

That is beautiful. I see these kinds of pictures and images, even statues, at Indian restaurant here and on the road at different hotels. I love the artwork, but art has always captured my mind and imagination. Though, I have to admit, I always thought Shiva was a goddess and not a god. I feel stupid, but I never studied those religions beyond some introductory stuff in a world religions class.

They look like a jovial bunch.

If you want to learn about the Hindu gods and religion in fun/casual way, I highly recommend the "Little Book of Hindu Deities". It is written and illustrated by a Pixar animator, Sanjey Patel, and is stylized like a children's book (but not really for children).

It's awesome.

When I get some time away from classes I should check that out. I love the artwork and find the dress of the women in many pictures very exciting. Very beautiful.

What's cool is that they always get along, and every New Year they travel to Japan on a treasure ship and deliver gifts (like Santa Claus, in a way). Some of the artwork depicts them clowning around with each other. There's an old illustration of Daikoku shaving Fukurokuju's giant head, while standing on a ladder.

Interesting. I think I prefer the drama, backstabbing and intrigue of the Greek Pantheon, though. :)
