Irrelevant? If you're being interviewed on tv and your point is to claim that the current President is doing a crap job because last time this happened, The Great Depression, the President did such and such then it's completely RELEVANT that you don't know what the **** you're talking about and your just bull****ting in attack mode.

Where did he say the president was doing a crap job?

Biden stated, according to the article: "When the stock market crashed, Franklin Roosevelt got on the television and didn't just talk about the princes of greed," Biden told Couric. "He said, 'Look, here's what happened.'"

Has Bush been talking about greed? If anything that is more of a criticism of the left who have been making these kinds of statements. Maybe Bush has been too and I've just missed it.

And how exactly is it relevant whether FDR talked on TV, radio, or newspaper to his point?

I took part of his statements and interpreted them as "Where is Bush?" Forget that Biden didn't know what the heck he was talking about for a moment. What was his point in saying Roosevelt went on TV? I think it was to make people think where is Bush, why isn't he on TV, why isn't he doing his job to instill confidence?

Course I could be wrong and that wasn't his point at all. But I took it as a passive aggressive dig at Bush that blew up in Biden's face. If it wasn't meant as a Bush dig, what other point was he making?

And, for what it's worth, I thought Biden had a point. Where is Bush and why isn't he on TV?

And what do you know, he'll be on tonight.

This is the fullest context of the statement I could find:

"Part of what being a leader does is to instill confidence is to demonstrate what he or she knows what they are talking about and to communicating to people ... this is how we can fix this," Biden said. "When the stock market crashed, Franklin Roosevelt got on the television and didn't just talk about the princes of greed. He said, 'look, here's what happened.'"

Behind The Scenes With Joe Biden, CBS News Anchor Katie Couric Spends The Day With The Democratic VP Nominee - CBS News

IMO it's a stretch to assume he was making a dig at Bush here. If Bush had been taking to airways and blaming the financial crises on the greedy I could see it, but I'm not aware of Bush making those kinds of statements. Maybe it is more a veiled reference to McCain. Without more of the context of the discussion, it's pretty hard to tell.

The point he was making, as I take it, is that this is not the time for playing the blame game and pointing fingers, but what government needs to do is be frank with the people about the nature of the problem, and what we need to do to address it.

As far as Biden's reference to FDR saying "look, here's what happened," that is not an inaccurate description. Here is the text of FDR's first fireside chat (and the others are on the same website) where he did precisely that.

That's the same link I had. You can actually watch the entire interview in the little window. The written quote has a large portion deleted.

And what Roosevelt did in 1933 was great, but look at what happened when Carter did basically the same thing about energy and he's still ridiculed today as having an energy plan that focused on sweaters.

That's not exactly the same as a misstatement.
Thank you. Some people *cough* liberals, hate to let little things like, facts, get in their way when they're trying to prove their opinion.

You mean like McCain's repeated ads which falsely claim Obama's tax plan would raise taxes on folks making over $42,000? That kind of lie *cough* fact?

Biden says FDR went on TV in 1929 to explain stock market crash. A Rake’s Progress

Found today on the American Pundit:

During his interview with Katie Couric on CBS News, Joe Biden (AKA Gaffemaster) had this to say:

“When the stock market crashed, Franklin Roosevelt got on the television and didn’t just talk about the princes of greed. He said, ‘look, here’s what happened.’”

First of all, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected 1932 — the market crashed in 1929. Second of all, Philo Farnsworth created the first working television in 1928. Again, the market crashed in 1929. FDR got on a device nobody had at a time when he wasn’t president? Joe, get a history book. Good Lord.

Perhaps Harvard might ditch any ideas of giving Joe Biden an honorary degree.

Thanks for the helpful update Navy. Somehow we had missed all that in 4 pages of posts.
