GOP Convention thread

Alright, thread for discussion about the convention, and the convention only. Please no derails from that. Thoughts, insight, etc regarding the convention...toss it up in here.

The red background of the first few speakers (not watching now, so don't know it is still red) made it feel like a nazi convention. Very uncomfortable backdrop being all red right where the close up of men speaking would be seen.

Romney's speech wasn't bad. Wasn't outstanding, I think they should've gone with a more uplifting message from him and a bit less attacking...leave that to Guilliani. Romney just has a presence that makes you feel that if you work at something, if you hope, you can do it cause you're America. Doing a more positive message would've been better for him I feel. Still, it was a good speech and well delivered from him.

Huckabee's was wonderful. Good humor, nice nod to Obama at the front, but did go after Obama a bit as well. A number of great lines which Huckabee has really been known for. Loved his one about not becoming a republican because he grew up rich, but becoming one becuase he didn't want to stay poor and didn't want to wait for hte government to fix it. The school desk story was a rather humerous, but also touching one. Another good speech.

All told, much better than last night. Also looking MUUUCH more full than last night. I'm waiting though for someone to try and take a picture angled so you get the left of the stage and try to use it as an example of how "empty" the place is. I noticed it when the camera went. They don't have people seated on that side as it would be blocked from the stage. When they show you the crowd actually facing the stage, the place is packed, but that's an EASY photo to take to spin. Will be interesting to see if any news outlet or poster tries.

I just checked, that red background is still there. That's just not good. not good at all. I get you're the red party, but it really looks like the reich. I'm expecting a straight armed salute any minute.

Funny, Romney gives me the impression that if you work hard, do all the right things, and try to live the American Dream, that it will be a guy just like him that outsources your job to a 12 year old slave laborer in Vietnam.

Huckabee was ok, he could have given an uplifting speech, something this convention really needs, but was kind of dry. It was nice that he gave a nod to Obama, like Obama did to McCain. However, while McCain always got near standing ovations from the gracious Democratic Convention, I think we got about a 1% clap rate for the nation's first African American on a major party ticket.

Let's all get a pool going on how many times Guiliani will mention 9/11.

Yeah but it is still a political convention, dull and boring by nature. How anyone gets wrapped up and "caught up" in the supposed excitement of these things is beyond me!

I had to chuckle at some of the posters here at DP comparing this "dull" RNC to the DNC show, which was much more exciting!! Which aint really saying much about the event of the celebrants IMO.

McCain is a true hero. Nobody compares to that, especially a dud like Obama who is still wet behind the ears, politically speaking.

-He did not wait for the government to rescue him from being poor
-Palin received more votes as a mayor than Biden received for President
-An amazing story about a school teacher teaching students about earning

Linda Lingle (Gov of Hawaii)
-Alaska has the same electoral votes as Delaware
-250 Delawares can fit into 1 Alaska

This night was by far better then last night. Less robot-looking speakers, a lot more energy.

Palin is about to come on.

The keynote speakers just talking the very talking points - 9iu11ianni saying that he'd get into specific issues than saying - McCain will cut taxes to better the economy - uh didn't we have 8 years of that? How has that worked so far?
Seems what Obama campaign has said were spot on, McSame.
Well at least he can stay on message.

Wow. EXCELLENT speech by Guilliani. The most fired up I've seen the convention so far, hit Obama hard while not really going for any of the "Smear" type things. Gave you a good difference in terms of experience, and capability to lead...especially in a time of crisis...between Obama and McCain. Great zingers, good tone and inflection, excellent interactions with the crowd.

The end points as he went over the actual platform points was well done as well, not low toned or boring but at the same upbeat tempo and tone that he set at the start, keeping people interested and excited. The end hitting with the surge was genius as well. Its getting good press now, we just turned over another province, Petraeus just came out said by next summer we should be having people back. Pointing out that McCain was one of the prime people pushing the surge, urging for the surge, and campaigning for it and saying that he, not Barack, was the one that was right about how to deal with the war on Iraq was well played.

A solid B speech at least, and a GREAT lead up. He gets a small bump in his grade no matter what it may be simply due to the way he whipped up the crowd. That's EXACTLY what he was meant to do. Its like any good opener for a musician or a comedian, you want them to whip that crowd into a frenzy so that the big act can come out and knock them dead right off the bat. He lined this convention in the palm of his hand and lined them up perfectly for Palin.

Now its time for her to either hit a home run, or a little infield single. For her, and McCain's, sake she better nail the homer.

But whatever she does, Guilliani set her up perfectly. Really really well done speech.
